Core D, Unit F, Evolution Blog 1

This week we begin our study of evolution or how species have adapted and become more complex over time. We will focus our attentions on fossils and fossil evidence for this blog.

Typical Fossil's found in ancient oceans. These fossils are known as Trilobites.  Trilobites are animal like mollusks that lived in the ocean, had a hard shell.

Use the link below to watch the movie and then answer the questions in complete thoughts.

National Geographic: Fossil Mystery Video

Analysis Questions: (5 points)
1. List the first 3 time periods in which dinosaurs lived from youngest to oldest.
2. What information is missing from the fossil record?
3. Give a possible explanation for why dinosaurs grew in size over time.
4. What characteristics would you expect to find in a mammal like reptile that would enhance its chances of survival over a plain reptile?
5. Why do you think this would be considered a transitional species?

National Geographic: Whale Evolution Video 2

Extended Response Question (16 points)
After watching both videos on whale evolution, respond to the following questions.
1.Explain why the modern whales ancestor moved from land to water and provide evidence to support your explanation.

2.Describe the physical changes that took place over time that made the modern whale a water dweller and  Explain how these changes would be considered adaptations to the new environment.

3. Compare the challenges that faced the modern whale as it evolved over time.

4. Describe how the whale survived over time when confronted by predators

1. The 3 periods are triassic, jurassic, and cretaceous.
2. A lack of fossils are missing.
3. A growth of the food that dinosaurs eat.
4. The amount of food it eats.
5. I think it would be a transitional species because it adapted to its new environment and became a top predator.

1. They moved from land to water because they couldn't get enough food on land.
2. The paleontological evidence comes from studying the fossil sequence from terrestrial mammals through more and more whale-like forms until the appearance of modern whales.
3. The challenge that faced the whale as it adapted was if it could get enough food.
4. The whale would just swim away if it was confronted by a predator.

1. List the first 3 time periods in which dinosaurs lived from youngest to oldest.
Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic.
2. What information is missing from the fossil record?
The info that is missing is a gap of time in the middle of the Jurassic period.
3. Give a possible explanation for why dinosaurs grew in size over time.
Some say that a meter struck Earth and left few survivors which allowed the animals to grow massively others say when the continents spread apart it created a lot more plant life which allowed the dinosaurs to become massive by eating a lot more plants.
4. What characteristics would you expect to find in a mammal like reptile that would enhance its chances of survival over a plain reptile?
The amount of food it eats.
5. Why do you think this would be considered a transitional species?
I think it would be a transitional species because it adapted to its new environment and became a top predator.

1. Explain why the modern whales ancestor moved from land to water and provide evidence to support your explanation.
The modern whales moved from the land to the sea in search of food. The animals food supply was going down sharply do to the change in climate, so it needed a new food source. It went into the water to find the new food source.
2. Describe the physical changes that took place over time that made the modern whale a water dweller and Explain how these changes would be considered adaptations to the new environment.
The paleontological evidence comes from studying the fossil sequence from terrestrial mammals through more and more whale-like forms until the appearance of modern whales.

4. Describe how the whale survived over time when confronted by predators.

1. List the first 3 time periods in which dinosaurs lived from youngest to oldest.

Triassic jurassic cretatious

2. What information is missing from the fossil record?

There is big gap in the jurraisc time period

3. Give a possible explanation for why dinosaurs grew in size over time.
The plant life was better makinf it easier for food and making the animals bigger.

4. What characteristics would you expect to find in a mammal like reptile that would enhance its chances of survival over a plain reptile?
The fur could keep it warm.

5. Why do you think this would be considered a transitional species?
it is rare and new type of species.

1.Explain why the modern whales ancestor moved from land to water and provide evidence to support your explanation.

THe ancestor moved to water because their food was wiped out by the heating of the earth wich makes alot of sea life for it to eat.

2.Describe the physical changes that took place over time that made the modern whale a water dweller and Explain how these changes would be considered adaptations to the new environment

IT would look for food on the side of water then started to evolve and hunted in shallow water then it started to go to deep water because the poles were starting to freeze more making not to much shallow waters so they were forced to go in deep waters. Then large shatrks began to hunt them and the whales had to go up too the artic oceans.

3. Compare the challenges that faced the modern whale as it evolved over time.

THe whale then get a soner because it needed to see more of animals.

4. Describe how the whale survived over time when confronted by predators.

The whale moved to the artic ocean it also got sonar to tell the size of things that are in the distance.

Analysis Questions:
1 Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous
2 How they Jurassic animals became so large.
3. The more food they had the more they could eat so they grew bigger
4. How much food it eats
5.Its a transitional species because it adapted to a new environment.
Extended Response Questions
3. Compare the challenges that faced the modern whale as it evolved over time.

4. Describe how the whale survived over time when confronted by predators.
1 Whales ancestor had to adapt to water because there food supply was failing. The climate was so hot the food supply started going away so the land whale found food in water.
2 The change over time to these whales is they started with feet and looked like a modern wolf. Then over time spend in the water they got longer tails and their feet adapted more eventually going to no feet at all. Its considered adaptations because they went from land animals with feet then to water animals without feet. That’s a major change to survive.
3 they had predators then but now they have pollution, man hunting them, ships in their habitat
4 The whales could control their bodies more than sharks could so they could live in colder waters making them less accessible to predators

Analysis:

1) Jurrasic, triassic, and creataceous are the three periods.

2)Fossils were missing.

3)They might have been mating a lot

4) It would be larger and have something that every other animal would be afraid of.

5) Because it adapted to its environment

1) They moved from land to the ocean in search for food.

2)They started with feet and eventually had none

3) Lack of food was a challenge

4)The whales were one of the bigger things in the ocean it could swim awway fast from predators.

2. The whale started as a land animal and adapted to the water by growing a tail and fins so it can swim faster, being light on one side of the whale and dark on the other so they predator is less likely to see it, It learned to live in underwater by being able to hold its breathe for massive amount of time to live under water.

3. It had a hard time in the begging learning how to swim and having to hold its breathe because it is a mammal and mammals don’t have gills and also the predators had something new to go after so it had to adapt to hide and get away from the predator.

4. It would use counter shading so when you are under it, it looks like it is part of the sky and when you look down it looks like it is part of the ocean, also it learned to swim faster so it could get away form predators and it grew massively so it would scare away predators if they even attempted to go after it.
