The Cheetah Problem!
This Chart shows the predicted decline in cheetah population throughout the world. Currently, there are roughly 10,000 cheetahs in Africa and Asia. The likely extinction of the viable cheetah population is sometime around 2015-2025. Viability is the key word. A population becomes genetically non viable when the population drops to below 12,000. It would seem likely that the species will survive but only in limited surroundings, provided captive breeding goes well. The problem of the endangered cheetah is quite complex but the underlying problem is really about human population growth and expansion.

23 comments:
1 Many farms have been converted in to farmlands and cattle ranches. Also the cheetah has not been really protected. Lastly the cheetah has been hunted for its fur.
2)They are from the same place and they hunt and migrate.
3)Most of them died.
4)The present day cheetah does not inbreed which cause the bottleneck.
5)The cheetahs flexible spine, oversized liver, enlarged heart, muscular body, non retractable claws and stabilizing tail.
6)If a disease spreads among the cheetahs it will wipe out all of the population.
7)Hunting, reduced habitat and competition with farmers.
8)They are trying to breed the cheetah. They are also trying to give land to the cheetah.
9)It’ not working because there is not enough genetic devises between the cheetahs to make a bigger diversity.
1.)The three main reasons why cheetahs are becoming extinct are loss of habitat, comerical farming , and development.
2.) Cheetahs are like wolfs because they are like wolves are in the u.s
3.)The ice age made all the cheetahs in north America, Europe, and most of those in Asia and Africa
4.) That all cheetahs today are more related then human identical twins and this affects there genitics and mutations.
5.)The cheetahs can run up to 73 mph and must of the animals that they hunt run up to 3.5 miles per hour.
6.)Cheetahs could be killed off very easily by feline dieses.
7.) Humans are the largest threat to the cheetah. The humans hunt them and reduce their habitat. Also famer compotation affects the cheetahs.
8.)The ccf has tried to stop the farming and has been going to schools to talk to students. Also the CCF has made a cheetah farm to save the animals. The CAT has been trying to make more of a natural by taking down houses and fences.
9.)Captive breeding is not working because all the cheetahs are related and are getting mutations and more chromosomes then they should have.
1. Three main issues that endanger the cheetah population is one, they are not protected in every place they are only in some places. This means people can kill them. Also the second reason all their lands where they live is being converted into farm land and cattle ranches. The third reason is people hunt them and kill them for cloths and their fur and patterns.
2. The cheetah and wolf are similar in nature by they are from the same place and they hunt and migrated like the wolves to the same place.
3. The Ice Age affected the cheetah population by, most of the cheetahs died during the ice age.
4. The major climate change genetic bottleneck for the current cheetah population by, all the cheetahs are more closely related then identical twins with less than 1 percent of genetic diversity.
5. They have a small set head, high eyes, tiny ears with a long slender body and long legged body. These characteristics make them exceptional hunters and predators.
6. The factor that could kill of cheetahs is how they do not have genetic diversity, also humans can kill them all out.
7. Three ways that humans affect cheetahs are one is hunting another is reducing there habitats and lastly competition with farmers.
8. The efforts that the CCF and the CAT are doing from keeping them to be extinct is, they are trying to breed the cheetah and trying to preserve land for them only.
9. The captive breeding is not working because there are not enough genetic differences between the cheetahs to make a bigger diversity between the species.

1) The loss of habitat to the cheetah, commercial farming in the cheetah’s habitat and development has all but eradicated the cheetah population.
2) The cheetah and wolf are both similar in nature because cheetahs are viewed by farmers in Africa, much as the timber wolf is viewed by ranchers in North America. Both the wolf and cheetah are close from being eradicated for good. The wolf is almost completely eradicated from North America, and the cheetah is on the same path as the wolf.
3) The last ice age approximately 10,000 years ago, all the cheetah in North America, Europe, and most of those in Asia and Africa perished.
4) The present day population of cheetah are derived from inbreeding by those very few surviving populations and closely related animals, this created a “genetic bottleneck” that has led to the present genetic state of cheetah such that all living cheetah today are more closely related than identical twins, with less than one percent genetic diversity as compared to a human's thirty-seven percent.
5) The cheetah has a course coat with round black spots, and distinctive “tear” stripes down the sides of its nose, a small head, high set eyes, and tiny ears combine with a slender, long legged body. The reason for the cheetah being so fast is because it has a flexible spine, oversized liver, enlarged heart, muscular body, non-retractable claws, and stabilizing tail that makes the cheetah the swiftest hunter in Africa and the fastest land mammal. The cheetah is a genetic hunter. Its prey is mainly small antelope that roam the plains of Africa.
6) The factor that could kill off the cheetah population very quickly is man. Man is the largest threat to the cheetah. Man poses threat distinctive threats to the cheetah: hunting/poaching, reduced habitat, and competition with farmers.
7) Three ways humans have reduced the cheetah population are they hunt and poach the cheetah, creating farms on the cheetahs habitat (reduced habitat), and competition farmers, and livestock farmers.
8) The CCF is trying hard to spread awareness about the cheetah population plummeting, they have been relocating the cheetahs so that they do not have to live in an area that was being destroyed because of farming, they have also become the owner of a 11,000 acre land called Cheetah view through the support of a donor. They have also tried several breeding conservations.
9) Captive breeding is not working well within the group because captive there are few cheetahs that are successfully released into the wild. Cheetah cubs need to be taught by their mothers on how to hunt, but this cannot be easily done while the cheetahs are in captivity because it is very difficult for them to learn.
1.Loss of habitat, commercial farming, and development, have all but eradicated the cheetah.2. They are like the wolfs because they are like cheatahs in africa like the wolfs are in the us.3. It perished a hole lot of cheatahs.4.This genetic "bottleneck", that has led to the present genetic state of cheetah such that all living cheetah today are more closely related than identical twins,5.They can jump really far and get there prey, also they are super fast can run up to 72mph.6. a feline disease spread among the cheetah, it could possibly wipe out the entire population.7. hunting/poaching, reduced habitat, and competition with farmers.8CCF provides medical assistance to ailing cheetah and nurses them until they are able to be reintroduced into the wil. some relative success in dealing with farmers.9. all the cheatas are realated and are gettin more chromozones a sometimes mution.

1. The three main issues that endanger the cheetah population is that their natural habitat has been cut off from them because humans are using that land for farming. The cheetah species is hunted by humans for fur and that lowers the population also. The last issue is that there is a disease spreading throughout the cheetah population and parents are not able to produce offspring.
2. The way that the cheetah and wolf are similar in nature is that they are both major predators and they hunt for their own food.
3. The way that the ice age affected the population is that it killed most of the population which left it with a very little population. The cheetahs that were left were the current stock of the time and not many more cheetah offspring were produced to build up the population.
4. The way that the climate event created the “bottleneck” is that with the present day population, it made a smaller diversity in the offspring with the small population.
5. The cheetah has a flexible spine, oversized liver, enlarged heart, muscular body, non-retractable claws, and stabilizing tail which enables it to be a very fast and swift hunter.
6. Cheetahs can still be scared and cautious of the larger cats and predators and if there were a disease to spread throughout them, it could kill their whole entire population.
7. Three ways that humans have reduced the cheetah population is by hunting, taking over their land for farming, and by using the animals for their own use by testing them for products and for their fur.
8. The CCF and CAT try to clear land for the cheetah to live and tell other farmers about the cheetah population. The CCF assists in medical care for the animals.
9. There is a lack of breeding for cheetahs because the average lifespan of a cheetah is 12 years and 90 percent of cheetah cubs die before they reach the age of 3 months old.
1. The three main issues why cheetahs have gone extinct are because cheetahs are being hunted more and more for their fur. Another Major reason is because their habitat has been taken away from them. They no longer have many places to live because of the land. Also their development has been a cause of extinction. The cheetahs have passed around a disease from cheetah to cheetah so the disease causes issues for the cheetah to the point where the cheetah can’t create an offspring.
2. The way that the cheetah and the wolf are the same in nature is that they both roam freely in the woods. They both have to hunt for their own food in the woods. They are also very similar because they are both a main predator in the woods.
3. The way that the Ice Age affected the population of cheetah is that the ice age killed off all the cheetahs and it killed off almost all the cheetah population leaving no cheetahs in stock.
4. It created the “bottleneck” because all the cheetahs living today are more closely related than identical twins, it made a smaller population in the offspring, causing a smaller diversity.
5. The physical features of the cheetah make them exceptional hunters because they have a flexible spine, an oversized liver, enlarged heart, muscular body, non-retractable claws, and stabilizing tail make the cheetah a fast and swift hunter.
6. A factor that could kill off the cheetah is that the cheetah still has predators and is still scared of the bigger and larger cats and they could have a disease that can be passed around, killing the cheetah population.
7. Three ways that humans have killed the cheetah population is that humans keep hunting the cheetah for their fur. Another reason is that the cheetah can’t have a good population because humans need a place to farm so they take the cheetahs land. Another reason is reduce in habitat. Cheetahs don’t really have a place to run around and find food for them and they don’t really have any habitat to live so the cheetahs are becoming extinct because they don’t have a place to live.
8. The CAT tells the other farmers and other people that the cheetahs land is getting stolen because of farms and that the cheetah population is going down because the cheetahs have no place to live. The CCF helps the animals in medical care. The CCF helps the animals whenever they have a medical issue or anything like that to try to get the cheetah population up.
9. There is a lack for the breeding of the cheetahs because the average lifespan is 12 years for a cheetah and 90 percent of baby cheetah cubs die before they are 3 months old.
1) One main issue is that they loss their habitat. The second main issue is commercial farming. The final main issue is development.
2) The cheetah and the wolf are simalar in nature because they hunt, live in a family, and come from the same place.
3) The ice age made the population decline.
4) It happens when the cheetah dosen't inbreed that causes bottleneck.
5) Some of the physical characristics of the cheetah is a fexable spine, oversized liver, enlarged heart, muscular body, non retractable claws, and stabilizing tail.
6) A factor that could potentily kill of all the cheetahs could be disease.
7) One way humans have reduced the cheetah population is hunting. The second way humans have reduced the cheetah population is that they reduced their habitat. The final way humans have reduced the cheetah population is that they have competition with farmers.
8) Conservation efforts by the CCF and CAT are underway to keep the cheetah population from becoming extinct is that they are trying to breed the cheetah's. They also are trying to give the cheetah's land.
9) Captive breeding is not working well with the cheetah population because there are not enough genetic diviers between the cheetah to make a bigger diversity.
1. One main issue that endangers the cheetah population is that many of their lands are being converted into cattle ranches and farmlands. Another reason is that a lot of the places they live are not protected. One last reason is that they are being hunted.
2. The cheetahs and wolfs are the same because they came from the same place and migrated to the same places.
3. The ice age affected the cheetah population by most a lot them dying from North America Europe, Asia and Africa, so there population went down.
4. This major climate event created a genetic “bottleneck” for the current population by most of the cheetah’s being closely related to each other.
5. The leopard spots on the cheetah help them to blend in to physical features.
6. One factor that would kill off the cheetahs very quickly is if farmers keep killing them. Farmers are there major threat.
7. Three ways the humans have reduced the cheetah population is, 1) They hunt them. 2) They took their food. 3) They took where they lived so they had nowhere to go.
8. To keep the cheetahs from becoming extinct they are bringing in cheetahs from Asia.
9. The breeding isn’t working because once you breed a diseased cheetah it carries on that disease to the babies and then the baby gets it. So they keep caring it on, so they keep dying.
1. List the 3 main issues that endanger the cheetah population. Loss of habitat, commercial farming, development.
2.How are the cheetah and wolf similar in nature? They both are eradicated
3. How did the ice age affect the cheetah population? They almost parished from Asia America
4.How did this major climate event create a genetic “bottleneck” for the current cheetah population? Because ever cheetah was part of the same family that survived.
5.Explain how the physical features of cheetahs make them exceptional predators. They can run up to 72 mph and can stride up to 8 meters

7.Describe 3 ways humans have reduced the cheetah population. Hunting or poaching, reduced habitat, compition with farmers
8.What conservation efforts by the CCF and CAT are underway to keep the cheetah population from becoming extinct?
9.Why is captive breeding not working well with the cheetah population? Most of them are relatred with chromosomes.
1. Loss of habitat, commercial farming, and human development.
2. They are similar because they both are a pest to farmers and ranchers.
3. The Ice Age killed all the cheetahs in North America, and nearly wiped out all of the cheetahs in Africa and Asia.
4. It created a bottleneck by not allowing the cheetahs to have diversity between each other.
5. The cheetahs are really fast. They can climb trees. They have sharp claws. And their fur is camoflauge. They also have sharp teeth.
6. Humans are the biggest threat.
7. We hunt them for their fur. We destroy their habitats. We also capture them and use them.
8.
1. List the 3 main issues that endanger the cheetah population.
Three main are loss of habitat, commercial farming and devilment.
2. How are the cheetah and wolf similar in nature?
Farmers are allowed to kill cheetahs on there and Farmers view the cheetahs like the wolf is viewed to the ranchers in North America
3. How did the ice age affect the cheetah population?
It killed all the cheetahs n North America, Europe, and most of those in Asia and Africa perished.
4. How did this major climate event create a genetic “bottleneck” for the current cheetah population?
The present day population of cheetah is derived from inbreeding by those very few surviving populations and closely related animals.
5. Explain how the physical features of cheetahs make them exceptional predators.
They are very swift and are the fastest land animal that make them hard to catch and hard to get away from.
6. What factor could potentially kill off all the cheetahs very quickly?
A feline disease could wipe them out.
7. Describe 3 ways humans have reduced the cheetah population.
The three ways hunting/poaching, reduced habitat, and competition with farmers.
8. What conservation efforts by the CCF and CAT are underway to keep the cheetah population from becoming extinct?
They are both tiring to save the cheetah. They are taking down houses to create for more land for the cheetah. They are also tiring to breed the cheetahs.
9. Why is captive breeding not working well with the cheetah population?
Most of them are related and they’re getting more chromosomes then they need. This means that they getting genetic problems.
1. Some of the issues is that Cheetah's face is loss of habitat, poaching and the last issue is habitat destruction.
2. The Cheetah and Wolf are similar because they are hazards to animals and humans.
3. The Ice Age affected the Cheetah's because it had origins in North America and it hit them about 10,000 years ago.
4. The climate has caused the Cheetah's population to decrease.
5. The Leopard spots on the Cheetahs help them blend into their surroundings.
6. The factor that could kill Cheetahs is humans. We poach them which kill many Cheetahs.
7. We poach them, destroy their habitat, and have a competition between farmers.
8. We could bring more Cheetahs from Asia
9. The Cheetahs do not breed as fast as other animals.
1. One of the issues is the decrease of habitat. Another reason why the cheetah is endangered is because of commercial farming.
2. The cheetah and the wolf are similar in nature because they both came near extinction and they threaten farms and humans.
3. The Ice Age affected the cheetah population because the cheetah had its origins in North America and Texas.
4. From the cheetahs in the Ice Age to the cheetahs present day, the population has gone down by a big number from inbreeding by the surviving ones.
5. The Leopard spots on the Cheetahs help them blend into their surroundings.
6. The factor that could kill of cheetahs is man. We poach them killing off many cheetahs.
7. We poach them, destroy their habitat, and have a competition between farmers.
8. We could bring more Cheetahs from Asia.
9. The Cheetahs do not breed as fast as other animals.
2. They are the same by their food chain how they live for survival.
3. It affected cheetahs because they didn’t provoke from cheetah to cheetah which made their population die down. And the cheetah isn’t amune to the coldness
4. It was bad for them because a lot of cheetah’s got sick, and started dyeing and not reproducing babies.
5. They had predators because they were meat eaters so they needed predators to survive.
6. Poaching and hunting and habitat distruction could kill them.
7. Climate change, hunting and poising.
8. Don’t make any more global warming and no more hunting.
9. Its not working well with them because a lot of cheetahs are dying which makes it hard for them to have cubs.
1. List the 3 main issues that endanger the cheetah population: Answers: 1. poaching 2. Habit destruction 3. Hunting
2. How are the cheetah and wolf similar in nature? Answer: Wolves were successfully eradicated from England and almost completely from North America; the cheetah is continuing along this path for the same reasons.
3. How did the ice age affect the cheetah population? Answer: It made it drop because the cheetahs couldn’t survive the cold.
4. How did this major climate event create a genetic “bottleneck” for the current cheetah population? Answer: It made the cheetahs derived from inbreeding.
5. Explain how the physical features of cheetahs make them exceptional predators. Answer: there long legs help them run fast. Their teeth are very sharp. Their color sticks out.
6. What factor could potentially kill off all the cheetahs very quickly? Answer: if we were still allowed to kill them.
7. Describe 3 ways humans have reduced the cheetah population. Answer: We killed them. We poached them. We used them for their hide.
8. What conservation efforts by the CCF and CAT are underway to keep the cheetah population from becoming extinct? Answer: they are trying to breed them. They also stopped people from killing them.
9. Why is captive breeding not working well with the cheetah population? Answer: They need a male and female to make the babies. Bottle neck also causes a problem.
1.Three main issues of cheetahs are:
- loss of habitat
- commercial farming
- development
2. The cheetah and wolf are similar because farmers view cheetahs the same way wolfs are viewed by ranchers. Also there is not many of them at all.
3. The ice age hurt the cheetah population. The cheetahs living now are living because of the inbreeding of the survivors.
4. This created a “bottleneck” because the present day cheetah is only alive from the inbreeding of the cheetahs who survived the ice age.
5. The cheetah is very fast and strong so it can catch its prey. Also it’s intimmadating.
6. Humans could kill off cheetahs quickly.
7. Three ways how humans reduced the cheetah population is:
- hunting and poaching
- reduced habitat
- competition with farmers
8. Farmers call the CCF before hurting the cheetah and they provide an environment for them.
9. Captive breeding is not working well because it’s hard for their mothers to teach them how to hunt and do other stuff. Also most cheetahs are not released out into the wild successfully.
1. The three main issues that en danger the cheetah population is loss of habitat, commercial farming, and development, have all but eradicated the cheetah.
2. The cheetah and wolf are similar in nature by both being carnivores.
3. The ice age affected the cheetah population by the entire cheetah in North America, Europe, and most of those in Asia and Africa perished.
4. The major climate event created a genetic “bottleneck” for the current cheetah population because the populations of the cheetah were derived from inbreeding by those very few surviving populations and closely related animals.
5. The physical features of cheetahs make them exceptional predators are the cheetah’s flexible spine, oversized liver, enlarged heart, muscular body, non-retractable claws and stabilizing tail make the cheetah the swiftest hunter in Africa and the fastest land mammal.

7. Three ways humans have reduced the cheetahs’ population are hunting them, reducing their habitat, and competition with farmers.
8. The conservation efforts by the CCF and CAT are underway to keep the cheetah population from becoming extinct by conducting education, research, and habitat protection. The CCF also provides medical services for sick cheetahs. The CAT is buying land to recreate a natural habitat for the cheetahs.
9. Captive breeding is not working well because the male cheetah’s sperm is non-functional and the female cheetah’s tend not to want to mate in captivity.
1. The three main issues that en danger the cheetah population is loss of habitat, commercial farming, and development, have all but eradicated the cheetah.

1) Three issues that endanger the cheetah population is loss of habitat, commercial farming, and development.
2) A cheetah and a wolf are similar because they are both carnivores.
3) The ice age which was approximately 10,000 years ago perished all the cheetah's in North America, Europe, and most of the cheetah's in Asia and Africa.
4) The climate caused the genetic "bottleneck" which caused limited genetic material to the offspring.
5) The cheetah has a flexible spine, muscular body, and a stabilizing tail which makes it the fastest land mammal and helps it catch its prey.
6) Farmer's are trapping and shooting cheetah's to prevent livestock loss. The largest cheetah population in the world had 6,000 animals and it was reduced to less than 2,500 animals.
7) Three ways humans have reduced the cheetah population is by hunting and poaching them, reducing their habit, and competition with farmers.
8) The CCF has been dealing with farmers and telling them to call the CCF when a cheetah is on their farm so they can get it removed from their farm without having to kill it.
9) Captive breeding is not working well with the cheetah population because the genetic "bottleneck" of the cheetah has resulted in limited genetic material. And most of the male cheetah's sperm is not functional.

1. One main problem that endangers the cheetah population is that many of their lands are being turned into into ranches and farms. Another reason is that a lot of the places they live arent protected. One last reason is that they are being hunted for their expensive and spotted fur.
2. Wolves and Cheetahs are similar because they are endangered and similar problems.
3. The ice age made the population go down.
4. today cheetahs do not inbreed which cause the bottlenecks.
5. Their distinct pattern and color allows them to blend in and stalk their prey.
6. A disease.
7. Humans have been the main cause of cheetah population. They are hunted, habitats are reduced and competition between farmers and livestock.
8. They are trying to breed the cheetah. They are also trying to give land to the cheetah..
9. because breeding family members wont lead to a healthy baby.
Tyler Freeman1.Three reasons are Loss of habitat farmers are comerical farming and development.
2.Cheetahs are like wolfs becasue they both hunt and migate in the same place
3.The ice age killed most of the cheetahs population
the climate created the Bottleneck.4They are the same other than identical.
5. There liver, heart, strong body, and there claws are all different from any other animal
6.If the cheetahs get a disease then the cheetah population will die out.
7.We hunt them.the farmers kill them with there comerical farming and we take there land.
8.they are helping the cheetah by giving them land and trying to make the farmers stop.
9.Its not working because the cheetahs are the same in so many ways and are making the same cheetah

1. One reason the cheetah is endangered is because of poaching. Too many people are illegally hunting cheetahs while they are endangered so they will be extinct if the people keep poaching. Another reason the cheetah is endangered is because Africa is becoming more modern and so the lands that the cheetahs live on aren’t fit for the cheetah’s lifestyle. The last reason cheetahs are endangered is because of their interacting with humans, cheetahs are protected by the CITES program but some African states allow cheetahs to be hunted on certain farmlands.
2. The cheetah and timber wolf are very similar because they are both endangered and there are programs to try and save them but people are still hunting them and they are still endangered.
3. The Ice Age affected the cheetah because after the Ice Age there were no cheetahs left in North America, Europe and most in Asia and Africa.
4. The Ice Age created a genetic “bottleneck” for the cheetahs because most of the cheetahs left are identical twins or very closely related, unlike before.
5. The cheetah’s body helps it because it has a small head, high set eyes, and tiny ears, along with a long, slender, long legged body, the cheetah’s flexible spine and muscular body make it the swiftest animal in Africa and the fastest land mammal.
6. The thing that produces the largest threat to the cheetahs is humans. Humans poach, take over the cheetah’s land and the competition with the farmers endanger the cheetahs greatly.
7. Three ways humans reduce the cheetah population is because of poaching, humans are illegally hunting the cheetah and killing them, the competition with the farmers, and the humans are taking over the cheetah’s habitat and taking their prey away.
8. The CCF is providing education, research and habitat protection for the endangered cheetahs. The CAT is trying to obtain land tracks that will be able to be conservation areas for the cheetahs.
9. Captive breeding is not working for the cheetah because all of the cheetahs are closely related and they are getting mutations and they are receiving more chromosomes than they should have.
