This week we begin our study of evolution or how species have adapted and become more complex over time. We will focus our attentions on fossils and fossil evidence for this blog.
Typical Fossil's found in ancient oceans. These fossils are known as Trilobites. Trilobites are animal like mollusks that lived in the ocean, had a hard shell. Use the link below to watch the movie and then answer the questions in complete thoughts. National Geographic: Fossil Mystery Video Analysis Questions: (5 points) 1. List the first 3 time periods in which dinosaurs lived from youngest to oldest. 2. What information is missing from the fossil record? 3. Give a possible explanation for why dinosaurs grew in size over time. 4. What characteristics would you expect to find in a mammal like reptile that would enhance its chances of survival over a plain reptile? 5. Why do you think this would be considered a transitional species? National Geographic: Whale Evolution Video 1 National Geographic: Whale Evolution Video 2 Extended Response Question (16 points) After watching both videos on whale evolution, respond to the following questions. 1.Explain why the modern whales ancestor moved from land to water and provide evidence to support your explanation. 2.Describe the physical changes that took place over time that made the modern whale a water dweller and Explain how these changes would be considered adaptations to the new environment. 3. Compare the challenges that faced the modern whale as it evolved over time. 4. Describe how the whale survived over time when confronted by predators. |

1. List the first 3 time periods in which dinosaurs lived from youngest to oldest.
Triassic,Jurassic,cretaceous.
2. What information is missing from the fossil record?
It is missing fossils.
3. Give a possible explanation for why dinosaurs grew in size over time.
Because they continents were moving apart and more food was around they think it made them bigger.
4. What characteristics would you expect to find in a mammal like reptile that would
enhance its chances of survival over a plain reptile?
it might have warm blood instead of cold
5. Why do you think this would be considered a transitional species?
Because it is a mixture of reptile and mammal
1.Explain why the modern whales ancestor moved from land to water and provide evidence to support your explanation. Because of a survival crisis climate change whipped out food supply.
2.Describe the physical changes that took place over time that made the modern whale a water dweller and Explain how these changes would be considered adaptations to the new environment. Found dead fish on shore and began to go into the water for more fish.
3. Compare the challenges that faced the modern whale as it evolved over time.
Body is good for hunting in bays. Body shape struggled when had to move to deeper water because it struggled to dive.
4. Describe how the whale survived over time when confronted by predators.
They traveled away from the equater to colder water because they have warm blood. There predators cant go there because they have cold blood.

Analysis Questions (5 points)
1.Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous.
2.They couldn’t find certain fossils, dinosaurs kept growing.
3.They were starting to evolve in size and shape, food.
4.It could have some warm or cold specific blood in the veins. Or they could adapt to their new environment.
5.I think so because they just kept growing and evolving and then they became extinct. That is why I think that they are a transitional species. They are also possibly a mixture of both.
Extended Response Questions (16 points)
1.I think so because they were originally warm-blooded, a mammal, and they breathed air through their lungs.
2.Climate Change, needed food so went in water, High Temperatures. They can use these changes to create a new environment.
3.Dramatic Climate Changes, Food source, Predators, body shape was perfect for hunting in bays, drop in sea levels.
4.Traveled away from the equator, headed to polar seas, went away from the Atlantic.
1.
-triassic
-jurassic
-cretaceous
2. A gap of time in the jurassic.
3. According to scientist the continents split make food source greater and causing them to grow larger. According to the Truth the Bible says that God created all things and that he just created them that way. The world has only been here some thousand years and at one point in time God caused a Great Flood on the earth which explains many of the fossils and wonders of the world.
4. Endurance ability in more than one or two climates, greater advantages in food hunting and gathering, and ability to live in all types of ecosystems.
5. Because it can adapt and transition to its enviorments.

A:
1. Triassic is the first time period which occured 250 million years ago. The next one is the Jurassic time period which happened 200 million years ago. The last one is Cretaceoous which was 145 million years ago.
2. There was a lack of fossils.
3. *Volcanoe exploded and a meteor crashed and killed manny of the dinosaurs.
*As the continents drifted apart, the climate became more favorable and caused an abundance in plant growth.
*They evolved into large dinosaurs.
4. The mammal like reptile could've been able to run fast, have big teeth and claws for more protection, and have been a big sized animal so it had lesser chance of getting hurt.
5. I think this would be considered a transitional species because it's a reptile and a mammal.
B:
1. It is because of a survival crisis climate change whipped out food supply.
2. One of the changes was climate change. They got their food in the water. This is adapted in their environment because their would be a smaller population in smaller species.
3. The climate change, food source, predators, decrease in sea levels, and body shape was perfect for hunting.
4. They traveled further away from the equator, headed to colder seas, and went to the Atlantic Ocean.

1. The youngest age of dinosaurs was the Cretaceous age. That was about 145 millions of years ago. The middle age of the dinosaurs was the Jurassic age and this age was about 200 million of years ago. The eldest age of dinosaurs was the Triassic age. That was about 260 million years ago.
2. The missing piece of the fossil record was in the middle of the Jurassic age. There is a gap in the fossil record. Scientists have found very few fossils that date back to the middle of the Jurassic age.
3. The end of the Jurassic age was when the dinosaurs really reached their maximum size. They were 30 to 50 tons in weight, sometimes even up to 80 tons. Chinese scientists have collected over 40 different types of dinosaurs. The smaller dinosaurs evolved into much bigger dinosaurs. Some scientists believe that there was a climate change which made the plants and other food supplies grow more. This would let the dinosaurs eat a lot and get more nutrients so they would grow and evolve a lot more.
4. I would expect to find warm blooded in a mammal that would keep the mammal warmer then a reptile in the winter. Also, a reptile would have fur also to keep it warmer than a reptile.
5. This would be a transitional species because they have changed a lot over time.
EXTENDED RESPONSE:
1. They moved from land to water because there was a better chance of survival in the water then on land at the time. There are also fewer predators in the water than on land. There is also a better chance of catching any food in the water than on land.
2. The changes that the ancestor of the whale made were that it got rid of its legs to be able to swim in the water; they got gills so they were able to breathe in the water; they got fins so that they would be able to swim in the water.
3. The challenges that the modern whale faced were that the human hunters hunted the whales for their flubber.
4. The whales survived over time by not confronting the predators head on and growing to a bigger size to scare off predators and any other species that are hunting whales.

1) Triassic, Jurassic, Creaceous
2)The dinasours kept growing and they couldnt find fosssils.
3) They went from big to small and started to evolve in there size.
4)It might have fur, be warm blooded or it could be the envirment in which it lives in.
5)It is transitional species because its is a mammal and reptile. So it was a mammal and then transformed into a reptile.
Extended Responce:
1)There food supply had whiped them out of there envirenment so the only place they could end up going was where there was food, and that was in the water.
2)they first just found fish at the shore, but once eating a good chunk of those, there next option was in the water. So they just started to adapt to the water.
3) There were Climate Changes, Predators, and theer body shape was good for hunting inthe bays.
4)They survived over time because they travled away from the equator making it into the Atlantic ocean.

1. triassic, jurasic, cretacious
2.they couldent find any fossils for the middle of the jurrasic age.
3. they nedded to adapt so peditors wouldent eat them.
4. fast strong legs, 4 legged.
5. Because we dont know what happend to them or why they grew.
-----------------------------------
1. not enough food, climate change.
2. went in water for food.
3. it got bigger and nedded more food.
4. It went to colder areas where only warm bloded people could go.
