COPY QUESTIONS A-D ONTO A WORD DOCUMENT AND SAVE IT BEFORE YOU POST YOUR COMMENTS!

You have 4 tasks to complete for this week's BLOG:

A. Explain how these two organisms are similar to each other at the cellular level? Hint: Compare plant and animal cells

B. Students at Rapid Run are conducting a microscope investigation of 3 different types of cells found in a local pond.  Their task is to identify what types of cell they observed and provide 2 pieces of evidence to support their findings.  Hint: Use your colored pictures and power point notes.

Slide 1: the cell is oval, is a brownish color with green spots, has a nucleus, and has a long flagella.

Slide 2: the cell is long and narrow, is green, has a nucleus, and was found near the top of the pond.

Slide 3: this cell is rectangular, has a green color, has a nucleus, and was part of large group of similar cells.

C.  Use the link below to practice identifying the organelles in an animal cell, plant cell, and bacteria cell. Play the game until you can win for every cell type.  Good practice for your quiz on Friday.  http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/health/anatomy/cell/index.htm

A) These organisms are basically the same at the celluar level except that that the plant cell has a cell wall while the animal cell only has the cell membrane.
B) Slide one is an animal cell, Slide 2 is a plant cell, and Slide 3 is a plant cell. We can tell the difference between cells because an animal cell is a brownish color and has a flagella. The plant cells are greenish in color and are long and rectangular.
C) Look Below.
Differences:

1) Size: Eukaryotic cells are much larger and more complex.

2) Nucleus: Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus, while eukaryotic cells do.

This makes sense, because eukaryotic cells are large enough that they need a nucleus to keep genetic activities close together and increase efficiency. Prokaryotic cells are small enough so that a nucleus is not necessary to maintain efficiency. Instead, prokaryotic cells have something called a nucleoid. The nucleoid is essentially imaginary, and is the region in which genetic activity occurs within the prokaryotic cell.

3) Structure of DNA: Eukaryotic DNA is linear while prokaryotic DNA is circular. Also, Eukaryotic DNA is organized into chromosomes and is complexed with specialized proteins called histones. In Contrast, prokaryotic DNA does not have histones associated with it and prokaryotic DNA does not form chromosomes.

4) Ribosome Structure: Eukaryotic ribosomes are much larger than prokaryotic ribosomes.

5) Organelles: The cytoplasm of prokaryotes does not contain any organelles.

Similarities:
1) Enclosed by plasma membranes.

2) Contain ribosomes.

3) Have DNA.

4) Filled with cytoplasm

A. Explain how these two organisms are similar to each other at the cellular level? Hint: Compare plant and animal cells
In common:
They both have a nucleus, and within that nucleus DNA is stored as a blueprint for the cell; vacules (sp?) are presnet in both, this is where the nutriets and waste products of the cell are stored; and, they both have mitochondria, which provide energy for the cell for various functions.
Differences:
Plants, have a cell wall, animals a cell membrane; vacules are larger in plants; plants, contain chloroplasts/chloropyll, and animal cells do not.
This is explaining a animal cell.
Slide 2: the cell is long and narrow, is green, has a nucleus, and was found near the top of the pond.
This explains a plant cell
Slide 3: this cell is rectangular, has a green color, has a nucleus, and was part of large group of similar cells.
This is explaining a plant cell.

A) The plant and animal cells are pretty much the same. The difference though is that the plant cells have a cell wall. The cell wall is so that the plant would be able to stay up and sturdy. The animal cells have a cell membrane. They don't need to have a wall, because they have bones.
B)Slide 1 is an animal cell, Slide 2 is a plant cell, and Slide 3 is a plant cell. The way we can tell which cells they are,is because animal cells are usually brown.Plant cells are usually green.
C)the differences are below

1) Size: Eukaryotic cells are much larger and more complex.

2) Nucleus: Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus, while eukaryotic cells do.

This is because eukaryotic cells are large enough that they need a nucleus to keep genetic movements close together and increase efficiency. Prokaryotic cells are small enough so that a nucleus is not needed to keep efficiency. Instead, prokaryotic cells have something called a nucleoid. The nucleoid is usually made up, and is the region in which genetic activity happens within the prokaryotic cell.

3) Structure of DNA: Eukaryotic DNA is straight while prokaryotic DNA is spiral. Also, Eukaryotic DNA is put together into chromosomes and is complexed with specialized proteins called histones. In Contrast, prokaryotic DNA does not have histones associated with it and prokaryotic DNA does not form chromosomes.

4) Ribosome Structure: Eukaryotic ribosomes are bigger than prokaryotic ribosomes.

5) Organelles: The cytoplasm of prokaryotes does not contain any organelle.

Similarities:
1) Enclosed by plasma membranes.

2) Contain ribosomes.

3) Have DNA.

4) Filled with cytoplasm

(miranda was responsible for question B. Melissa did A&D)

A. The Difference between Plant and Animal cells is that Plant Cells have a cell wall that gives it a rigid shape and protects it from most harmful Affects of nature. Animal Cells don’t have that. Plant cells also have chloroplasts which are used for the process of photosynthesis. Animal Cells have a small vacuole and a centered nucleus. Animal Cells also have a Centriole. Plants do not have that.
The similarities between them are that they both have a Cell Membrane, a Mitochondrion, ribosomes, an endoplasmic reticulum, a nuclear membrane, a nucleus, a nucleolus, a chromosome, a vacuole, a Golgi apparatus, a cytoplasm, a flagellum.

D. The Differences:

- The first difference is the size. Eukaryotic cells are much larger and more complex than Prokaryotic cells

- The second difference is the Nucleus. The Nucleus is only in the Eukaryotic cells and not the Prokaryotic cells.

- The third difference is the Structure of D.N.A. The Eukaryotic DNA is linear while prokaryotic DNA is circular. Also, Eukaryotic DNA is organized into chromosomes and is complexed with specialized proteins called histones. In Contrast, prokaryotic DNA does not have histones associated with it and prokaryotic DNA does not form chromosomes.

- The fourth difference is the Ribsome structure. The Eukaryotic ribosomes are much larger than prokaryotic ribosomes.

- The fifth difference is the Organelles. The cytoplasm of prokaryotes does not contain any organelles.

The Similarities:

- The First Similarity is that they both have enclosed by plasma membranes.
- The second similarity is that they both contain ribosomes.
- The third similarity is that they both have D.N.A
- The fourth similarity is that they both are filled with cytoplasm

A. The plant and animal cells all have a membrane, cytoplasm, nucleoplasm, nuclear membrane, nucleolus, Golgi apparatus, ribosome, smooth endoplasmic reticulum, rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and microtubules.
B. Slide 1: This slide must have been an animal cell because only animal cells have flagella.
Slide 2: This cell must be a bacteria or some type of bad stuff.
Slide 3: This cell was a plant cell because the question said it was part of large group of similar cells.
D. One diff. between Eukarotic and Prokaryotic cells are the size of them. The Eukarotic is the bigger one. Another one would be that Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus, but the eukaryotic cells do have a nucleus. One other diff. Would be that the DNA is much different from each other the Eukaryotic cell’s DNA structure is linear but the Prokaryotic is circular. Eukaryotic ribosomes are way larger than Prokaryotic ribosomes. Some similarities would be that the Eukaryotic cells evolved from the Prokaryotic. They both are closed by plasma membranes. The both contains Ribosome. And they have DNA.
