Core B, Micro-life, week 3

 Bad Bacteria
Germ History Made Simple
Microbes are tiny organisms that cause diseases such as; strep throat, ear infections, and pneumonia in people.  Microbes were first discovered in the late 1600s, but the idea that these tiny organisms could cause these diseases did not develop until the 1800's.

Rudolf Carl Virchow(1821-1902)German doctor

Founder of social medicine. First to describe White Blood Leukemia.
Robert Koch(1843-1910)

Prussian Physician. Founded Micro Biology. Identified microbe that caused “Anthrax” which was killing thousands of cows.

Joseph Lister(1827-1912)

British surgeon Sterile Surgery Made surgery safer for patients.

B.
• B. 1. All living things or organisms are made of cells and their products.
• New cells are created by old cells dividing into two.
• Cells are the basic building units of life.
C. Louis Founded the process of pasteurization. This Keeps the drink fresh and does not spoil as fast. We still today have to go through that process, by keeping our drinks in the fridge.
D. The germ theory is called Bacteriology. He believed the diseases were caused from germs attacking the outside of the body.

Rudolf Carl Virchow (1821-1902) German doctor

He is a founder of social medicine His work supported emerging ideas on cell division and metabolism

Louis Pasteur used the process of pasteurization. This process was which the milk was heated but not at a boiling point but warm enough to kill the germs and bacteria and the drink was then kept cold until it was used. The way that this process continues in our lives today is that the milk we use is kept in a refrigerator to keep it cold.

D. Briefly explain the term Germ Theory of Disease.
It was a theory that cured bacteriology. Louis believed that diseases were caused by germs attacking the body from the outside.

Joseph Lister

Discovered carbolic acid’s antiseptic properties Infection was not caused by air
B) The three main components of the Cell Theory are one; all living things or organisms are made of cells and their products. Two, News cells are created by old cells dividing into two. Third, cells are the basic units of life
C) The of Louis Pasteur contributions made food and beverages safer for people by, figuring out that milk needs to be kept cold and refrigerated or else is will spoil or cause disease. Also the germ theory of disease, if he did not figure this out then we could all get very sick. Because we wouldn’t know what needs to stay at what temperature for it still to be safe and healthy and not cause diseases.
D) The Germ Theory of Diseases is, he believed that diseases were caused by germs attacking the bodey from the outside.

Rudolf Carl Virchow

He was one of the first to describe "white blood".

Virchow was sent to Prussia to treat victims of a typhus epidemic.

Robert Koch

Famous for the discovery of the anthrax. Identified microbe that caused “Anthrax” which was killing thousands of cows.
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
Wartime Nurse
Famous for her work in the military hospitals of the Crimea, Nightingale established nursing as a respectable profession for women. In 1860, she established the Nightingale Training School for nurses at St Thomas' Hospital in London.
Joseph Lister

He had explored the inflammation of wounds. At the Glasgow Royal Infirmary he put in charge of its new surgical building.

B. Plasma membrane: is the last wall of protection, capsule: is the layer that covers the cell, and pili: are the sensory tips on the cell.
C. His research led to the process of pasteurization of milk to kill viruses and harmful bacteria. The milk is not heated to the boiling point which would change the flavor, but is heated to a temperature sufficient to kill the bacteria which would cause it spoil easily or cause disease. It is then chilled and must be kept cold until used. He named the new science bacteriology and suggested a new theory, The Germ Theory of Disease. He believed that diseases were caused by germs attacking the body from the outside. The idea of immunization* with a weakened version of a disease was not new. As early as 1774 a vaccine for smallpox* had been discovered, and Edward Jenner before 1800 was vaccinating people against smallpox. He found that if he inoculated people with cowpox, they got the less severe disease which prevented them from getting smallpox.
D. The germ theory of disease is mostly about the diseases over time and how they can be prevented.

B) refers to the idea that cells are the basic unit of structure in every living thing. The theory says that new cells are formed from other existing things and that the cell is a fundamental unit of structure, function and organization in all living things.

C) Louis Pasteur created the process of pasteurization. This killed harmful bacteria and viruses. He also made a vaccinated against the disease called anthrax also one for smallpox.
D) Germ theory of disease is a theory that proposes that microorganisms are the causes of many disease’s.
