Core A, Week 4

We have been learning about how scientists set up and conduct experiments.  In activity 4, we learned about controls, placebos, and how to look at and analyze data. In the Goldfish Respiration lab we used a control to compare the effects of cold on a fish's breathing. We also graphed our results using different sample sizes (our class and  all classes) to gather evidence to support or disprove our hypothesis. And, on Monday, we looked at  how insect repellents are tested and identified our Control, IV, and DV. The Goldfish lab was good example of a controlled experiment because we only tested one variable; Temperature.  The Insect Repellent experiment was not a good example, because some of the test subjects drank Mountain Dew and others did not, which gave us bad data for 2 of the repellents.

Key words
  • Independent Variable (IV) The variable that is changed or manipulated in an experiment.  The cause.
  • Dependant Variable (DV) The variable that responds to the change or manipulation in an experiment. The effect.
  • Control- a standard used for comparison that is not changed in the experiment.
  • Controlled Experiment- An experiment that tests only one variable at a time. .
Respond to both A and B by Tuesday 9/28

A)  Use the link below to watch the Myth Busters video clip. Answer the following questions after watching the clip..
  1. What was the hypothesis (if and Then)
  2. What was the control?
  3. What was the IV
  4. What was the DV
  5. Do you think this was a controlled experiment? Provide evidence to support your answer.

B) I would like for you to redesign the insect repellent lab so that it will be a Controlled Experiment. Describe how you would change it, so that we only test one variable at a time.

There was no control.

if they make it explode then the water heater will go through the roof and break anything.

the IV was the house because it changed.

The DV was the water heater.

to make the ant reppellent expariment more controlled then i would make everyone drink and eat the same thing.

1. If the psi of a water heater gets too high then it will shoot out of the house.
2. There wasn't a control.
3. The IV was the psi of the water heater.
4. The DV was the water heater.
5. I think it was a controld experiment because they thought that a water heater could become a rocket if it got to hot.

B) To make the insect repellent lab a controled experiment I would have to take out the number of bites that a test subject got after standing insid a room filled with mosqetos.

1. If you put enough pressure in the water heater then it will blow the house up.

2. There is no control.

3. The IV was the pressure.

4. The DV was how fast the house blew up.

5. I don't think this was a controlled experiment because it didn't have a control. You need something to compare it too.

B) For the insect lab I would make it 2 seperate experiments. I would make one for the mountain dew and one just for the bug spray. I would also have had only one control and not 3. I would also make everyone stay in the room full of mosquitoes for more then 10 minutes because you don't really know if the mosquitoes were really biting the people.

What was the control?
if you over pressurize a water heater then it will explode.

What was the IV
The iv is the house because it changed by beging blown up.
What was the DV
it was the water heater.

Do you think this was a controlled experiment? Provide evidence to support your answer.yes i think it was a controled expermint because in the reppellent for bugs was alot more controled by making people drink moutain dew before they tested them.

Q...What was the hypothesis (if and Then)

A...If the water heater explode then it will go 500 feet through the roof.

Q...What was the control?

A...There was no control but maybe the control was another water heater kept at normal.

Q...What was the IV

A...The water heater was the independent varible.

Q...What was the DV

A...The presure in the water heater after makin more pressure to make it shoot throughthe roof of the house.

Q...Do you think this was a controlled experiment? Provide evidence to support your answer.

A...No i dont think this was a controled experiment because if it was than they would of had something to compare it to at normalpresure but the didnt have one to.

A1.The hypothesis was if they put a air compressed tank in a house and it reached a so high PSI then would it go crazy and blow through the roof.
A2.They had no control.
A3.If they put the water heater under to much pressure will it shoot like a rocket.
A4.It reaced pass the tanks pressure and shot up like a rocket about 300 feet in the air.
A5.Yes I think it was because the only thing they were testing was to see if a water heater can shoot up like a rocket.
B.Have a room filled with mosquitos and have the people not eat or drink anything but water because if they had suger it would ruin the experement on testing the bug repellents.

1) If there is to much pressure, then the water heater will launch like a rocket.

2) There was no control in this experiment.

3) The IV was the amount of pressure in the house.

4) The DV was the amount of time it took the water heater to explode.

5) This was not a controlled experiment because it did not have a control. This experiment did not have anything to compare too so there was no control.

B) I would change the insect repellant lab by not having anyone eat or drink before the expirement so that there would only be one variable in the experiment.

What was the hypothesis (if and Then)? The hypothesis was that if you over presurize a water tank then it will turn into a rocket.

What was the control? There was no control in the expeirement.

What was the IV?The IV was the preasure of the water tank

What was the DV?The DV is the wrekage of the house.

Do you think this was a controlled experiment? Provide evidence to support your answer. No because it did not have a control to compare with the over presurized tank.

B) I would like for you to redesign the insect repellent lab so that it will be a Controlled Experiment. Describe how you would change it, so that we only test one variable at a time. I would have nobody eat or drink before the test but have different bog repellants.

A)1.If you raise the PSI then the water heater will become a rocket.
2.There was no control in this experiment. Maybe the control was a normal water heater instead of an over pressurized one.
3.The IV was the PSI.
4.The DV was the water heater.
5.No because there was no control to compare the water heater to. There was also not enough information given to us.

B) I would change the insect repellent lad by having two separate experiments. I would have one experiment where it compared water to insect repellent and the other would compare Mountain Dew to insect repellent. In both experiments the in insect repellent is the control.

A2. There was no control in this experiment.
A3. The independent variable is the pressure buliding up in the water heater.
A4. The dependent variable was the water heater that blew up from the pressure change.
A5. No because the house was very small. It would have made a difference if the would have shot the heater from a basement and used different types of roofs.
B. To make this a controlled experiment they should have everybody drink mountain dew one day and use the repellents they had and then the next day substitue mountain dew for water and use the repellents.

2.There was no control in this experiment.
3.The independent variable was PSI.
4.The dependant variable was the water heater.
5.No, because there was no control in this experiment to compare it to.
B.)I would change the number of people who had Mountain Dew on the day of the experiment to 5 so that it would be half of the people in the experiment instead of 2 people. I would do that because, it would help you be able to tell if the Insect Repellent actually worked.

It wasnt because it just blew up so quickly.

I would change it so that no one had mountain dew, and that everyone in the experiment would have ate instead of just a few people.

I would redesign the experiment by having only one water repelant for a better contol. I also wouldnt let anyone drink mt.dew before the experiment either or it may throw off the results. Taht is how i would make it mor controlled.

There was no control group in this experiment.

If the mythbusters made the water heater explode then it would go through the roof and just about anything.

The dependant variable was the water heater

The independant variable was the little shack because it changed shape

If i would want to make the repellant better then i would make everybody eat, drink, and do the same thing during the test.
