Core C, Week 5

As we wrap up Unit A, "Studying People Scientifically", I thought it would be interesting for us to investigate a new product on the market for consumers. Have you heard about Power Balance Bands? According to the Power Balance website, their product gives you energy, power, and gives you better balance for about $60.00. Is this a new and exciting scientific breakthrough or is this product a scam? So the real question is do these bands really work or is this a hoax? Lets check out the claims and watch the videos and let the evidence help us make  some informed decisions about this products claims.

Check out the link below from Power Balance's own website.

Video One

Video two

Respond to both A and B by Tuesday 10/5
A) Based on your observations, what are your thoughts on the effectiveness of the Power Balance Bands? Give 3 pieces of evidence to support your ideas.

B) After watching video two, answer the following questions about how the power balance bands were tested.
  1. What was the hypothesis (if and Then)
  2. What was the control?
  3. What was the IV
  4. What was the DV
  5. Do you think this was a controlled experiment? Provide evidence to support your answer.
C) Why is it important to test products scientifically before making them available to the public?

A. I think that they don't work because I don't think that bracelets will affect someone's body. Another reason is the people who tried them they seemed to have still feel the same. And maybe they just want to make money.
B.1. If the power bands work then everyone would want to buy them.
2. The control would be the people who did get a placebo. They got the wrong card.
3. The Independent variable is the person who got the real card.
4. The dependent variable is the length of time of the bracelet.
5. Yes because it was tested.
C. I think that it is important because so that the people who bought it would be satisfied with it.

A) Based on your observations, what are your thoughts on the effectiveness of the Power Balance Bands? Give 3 pieces of evidence to support your ideas.
I think they work on different people. 1 reason why I think they work is because Shaq says its works. Also when the power bands were tested, the person that had did not even have the band in their pocket was still able to be just as strong. Another reason is people could get tricked.
B) After watching video two, answer the following questions about how the power balance bands were tested.
1. What was the hypothesis (if and Then)
If you wear the bracelet and it works.
2. What was the control?
The peoples flexibility and strength.
3. What was the IV
hologram chip
4. What was the DV
The results stronger and more flexibility.
5. Do you think this was a controlled experiment? Provide evidence to support your answer.
Yes because only one thing changed.
B) Why is it important to test products scientifically before making them available to the public?
It’s important because you need to know if it works and if it could hurt people.

Answer A: I think that the Power Balance bands work. I think this because in the first video, Shaq said that him and four other teammates of the Phoenix Suns wore Power Balance bands, and they won by 57. 2.) In the second video, the trainer said that after he put the bracelet on, his strength and stamina were improved by 500% during a test. 3.) In the first video, the students of St. Ignatius in Cleveland, Ohio, and they all seemed impressed by the Power Balance bands.
Answer B:
1. If the Power Bracelet band is on, then your strength, flexibility, and stamina will be increased.
2. The control in the videos was the people without the Power Balance bands on.
3. The independent variable in the experiment was the four placebo cards, and the one PBB.
4. The dependent variable in the experiment was no change in energy.
5. I do not think this was a controlled experiment because they weren’t testing one variable at a time.

A. Based on what I observed about the power band is I don't think it works. I think that is all in the peoples head. I think the power band has no effect on peoples strength, flexibility, or balance and is just a waste of money.

B. 1) The hypothesis is that If you wear the power band then your strength, flexibility, and balance should inprove.
2) The control is people who didn't wear the power band and had the tests done on them.
3) The IV is when 4 people had the fakes and only one person had the real thing.
4) The DV would be no change in energy.
5) I do not think this was a controlled expieriment because the person who had the real thing and didn't know, there strength, balance, or flexibility didn't improve.

A) Based on my observations I think that this product does not work.
1) When they performed the experiments often times it seemed like they pretended to push down with all their strength.

2) The testees often think that the product will work and then their minds play tricks on them and they become stronger, like if you have some one who is deadly afraid to fight and some one is messing with his wife, the guy`s adrenillan will kick in and he will become a star fighter to defend his wife, then afterwards he trys to fight and can`t again.

3) The experiment where they secretly hid the card with the hollogram in it in a random testees pocket. The

A) Based on your observations, what are your thoughts on the effectiveness of the Power Balance Bands? Give 3 pieces of evidence to support your ideas.

A) Based on my observations, my thoughts of the power balance band was that they are a fake. My first explanation is in the second video they tested which person out of 5 had the bracelet on and the maker chose and could not determine who was wearing the bracelet. My second explanation is that during the second video also they tested to see if the hologram was the cause of more balance, strength, and flexibility but again out of 5 the maker could not determine who had the right hologram. My third explanation is that in class Mr. Watts tried to balance himself without the bracelet and then with it on and he felt no change.

B) After watching video two, answer the following questions about how the power balance bands were tested.
1. What was the hypothesis (if and Then)
2. What was the control?
3. What was the IV
4. What was the DV
5. Do you think this was a controlled experiment? Provide evidence to support your answer.

Hypothesis- If you wear the power balance band on then you will have more balance, flexibility, and strength.

Control- people not wearing the bracelet.

IV- The bracelet
DV- Your strength, balance, and flexability

I do think that this was a controlled experiment because you had a control (something to compare), you had a testable hypothesis, and it was a reproducible procedure/ hypothesis.

C) Why is it important to test products scientifically before making them available to the public?

It is important to test products scientifically before making them available to the public because first off you have to know if it is safe. Secondly you have to be able to see if the medicine works. Thirdly you have to see what the product is in use for like does it heal coughing or a stomach ache?

I think that they don't work one reason I think they don't work is Shaq said that it works but he is already strong. When the power bands were tested, the people who didn't even have the band in their pocket was still able to be just as strong meaning the power bands dont work. Another reason is people could get tricked.
B) After watching video two, answer the following questions about how the power balance bands were tested.
1. What was the hypothesis (if and Then)
If you wear the bracelet then it wont help your strength or flexibility
2. What was the control?
The persons flexibility and strength.
3. What was the IV
The IV was the hologram chip

A answer: I think that the Power Balance bands are totally a scam. Like the SHAM wow, it claims that it has a certain quality and then raises the prices to get people to buy it. The guy in the you tube video said that it might have a placebo effect on some people, causing them to think that it works, but is just fooling their brain. The price is a high $60, which makes more people think that if they are paying more money, they are getting a better product. I think that they are ripping you off that money and causing them to get rich while the consumers get poorer.

1. If the bands work, then athletes will feel stronger and do amazing things with their bodies
2. The control was the The people that had the placebo effect
3.when the people had the placebo and one of them had the real thing
4. The people couldn’t tell the difference between the placebo and the actual chip
5. Yes because there was a control and it was testable
C answer: Without the proper testing, the products may be harmful to people.

A: I believe that it is a scam because when they tested it and people didn’t know they had it on they didn’t see a difference. When they knew that they had it on though they thought it really worked. Two other people tested it to and they said it worked because they tested it with it on and off and it made a difference but really they were just receiving a placebo effect.

B: In the 2nd video the hypothesis is if the people are more flexible, strong, and balanced then the power band works. The independent variable is the power band and the dependent variable is the strength, flexibility and the balance. Yes, it was a controlled experiment because it has a hypothesis and a good procedure and a placebo and real medicine group and it has a good sample size.

C: It is important because you need to know that it works and if it has any signafects.

I think the power bands work, because why would so many people want to sell them if they don't work? I mean who wants to prove themselves wrong by doing many many experiments on them to see if they actually work. Second all the tests the scientists and inventors do on the power band turn out succesful. But no thats not enough for people who think they don't cause they don't want to be proved wrong. Third so many very famous rich people are trying to people that the band works. Im pretty sure that Shaq doesn't really need any more money but still he is trying just like the rest of the us (people who believe the band works) to prove it actually works.
B
The power balance credit cards aren't very useful i think, because the card doesn't touch your skin as in the power band you were on your rist. The reason i think that the power balance credit card didn't work, is because the users didn't have skin contact making the waves that are attracted the band not touch the body of the user. The hypothesis of the scientists where that if the person had the card in there pocket the same effects of the power balance band would take place with the power balance card. (but the card wasn't touching the users skin) The control was the people that had the power balance card in their pocket. The IV was if the person had the power balance card in their pocket then they would have the effects happen to them. The DV was the inventor of the band would be able to tell if they had the card or not. I do think this was a controlled experiment. They had people test out the bands and do different experiments with them.
C
The reason it is important to make sure the product works by scientific experiments is, because if they sold it to the public without the product working then the public would probably goes crazy over it.

Answer A: My thought on the power band is that it works and it’s effective. Three examples that support my idea is that o Neal had it on when they beat the team by 53 and when he didn’t he scored lower. Another idea is that he tested it on people for balance and it worked.
Answer B: 1. If the power band works then the people will be stronger.
2. When the four people lined up and the guy had to see which one has it
3. The power band was the independent variable
4. The dependent variable was the balance and strength of the band
5. I think that this is a controlled experiment because they have all the right steps to be a controlled experiment.
Answer C: It is important to test it more than once because it would make people think it works if is tested more than once.

Yes I have herd of the power balance bands.I think this product is a scam, I think its all in the peoples heads!
A) My thoughts on the power bands is that’s I think it’s a hoax! Its all in people heads. One reson on how I know its in there heads is that because in Austraila when they preformed the test and the people nor the performer didn’t know who had the real bands they could not tell a change in anyone’s strength, flexibility or anything else. Another one is that people can just try harder when they have the power band on.
B) If the bands work then the person will be stonger ,more flexible ,and more endurance.
The control is the flexibility or the strength.
The IV is the hologram chip.
The ID is the results.
Yes I do think this is a more contrloed experiment because only one thing changed.
It is important because they need to find out if there are side effects or if the medication works.

Answer B: 1. If the power band works then the people will be stronger.
2. The control is when they lined up in a row of four and the guy had to pick the right person who had the power balance.
3. The independent variable is the effectiveness of the power balance bracelet
4. The dependant variable is when he had to guess who had the power band.
5. I think this was a controlled experiment because they had four people lined up and had three cards that did not have the power balance in it and one that did.
Answer C: To show that it works and if it is worth the money to buy it.

A. I don’t think the power balance band works. Video two had a lot of evidence for my opinion. They tested it twice and both of the times it didn’t work. When the people new they had the band it would work but when people didn’t know the band didn’t work. They put the chips in cards and made everybody close their eyes so they wouldn’t know if they had the chip. It didn’t work.

B. 1. If they people didn’t know they had the band then the band didn’t work.

2. When they know if they have the power band.

3. Not knowing who had the band.

4. It didn’t work if they didn’t know who had the power band.

5. This is a controlled experiment because only one thing changed and that was knowing who has it.

C. It’s important

I think that the Power Bands are a total waste of money. When the people were testing the bracelet, they felt the same as before. This doesn't improve strength or felxibiltiy, and a BIG waste of money.

B1: If the Power Bands actually work, then people would buy them.

B2: The control in this experiment is the people without the Power Bands.

B3: The independant variable is the four cards.

B4: The dependant variable was no change in the energy.

B5: I think this a controlled experiment because the people tested the bracelet.

C: It is important to test an experiment before selling it so the product works jujst fine.

A. I think that the power bands dont work, they just kind of trick your mind into thinking they do like a placebo. I think this because even the creator wasnt able to tell who had the power band in the trials and expermints.

b. my hypothesis is if you wear the power balance band on then you will have more balance, flexibility, and strength.

The control is The persons flexibility and strength.

IV- The braclet itself.
DP- The balence flexibility and strengh of the person(s).

I think it was a controlled expermint, but it could have been better if they hd more trials and tried testing the power band in differnt ways.

C- to show to people that they think its worth the money to buy a power band
