Eat your vegetables, before they eat you! This week we will be learning about genetics. Earlier we learned about traits and characteristics and how they affect the appearance of an organism. This week we will be focusing on inherited traits, genes and alleles. We will also be setting up an experiment that shows how these inherited traits are passed from parent to offspring in plants! KEY WORDS Inherited Traits- An inherited trait is a characteristic passed from parents to the offspring or child through genes. Genes- The basic unit of heredity. Different forms of genes are called alleles. Alleles- Alternative form of a gene inherited separately from each parent. (for eye color the allele might result in blue or brown eyes). KEY CONCEPT: All organisms have genes and inherited traits. You have 3 tasks to accomplish for this week's BLOG. A. Read the article (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts. 1. What are inherited traits? 2. How many pairs of chromosomes are found in a human cell? How many genes? 3. How do you know if you have a recessive trait? B. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts. 1. What is the structure & function of chromosomes? 2. A. Read the article (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts.
1.What are inherited traits?
Inherited traits are things that you inherit or have been passed on from your parents.
2.How many pairs of chromosomes are found in a human cell? How many genes?
There are 23 chromosomes pairs and 35,000 genes.
3.How do you know if you have a recessive trait?
You know if you have one because a recessive trait is when you or only a couple people in your family have that trait instead of the majority.
B. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts.
1.What is the structure & function of chromosomes?
The structures are long pieces of DNA that are in the shape of an X and these determine things such as your eye color, hair color, skin color, ect.
2.What is the difference between a body cell and a sex cell?
Body cell has twice the amount of chromosomes as a sex cell and a sex cell only has half the amount of chromosomes as a body cell.
3.How do people get Down's Syndrome?
They have extra chromosomes.
C. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts.
1.Genes are part of what?
They are a part of DNA.
2.Explain how genes are like family recipes?
They are like family recipes because they are passed down from generation to generation.
3.How many chromosomes do the following organisms have:
•humans - 46
•horses – not on the video
•chimpanzees - 48
•monkey's - 42
•cows - 60

A
1. An inherited trait is characteristics passed down from parents and grandparents through genes to their children.
2. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes found in a human cell and there are 35,000 genes.
3. To know if you have a recessive trait there are variations known as alleles.
B
1. The structure of chromosomes is a long strand of DNA and its function is to create traits.
2. The difference in chromosomes and sex cells is that sex cells have half of the other chromosomes.
3. People get Down Syndrome from having an extra chromosomes.
C
1. Genes are a part of the nucleus.

3.
humans – 23 pairs of chromosomes
horses – 4 ?
chimpanzees – 24 pairs of chromosomes
monkey's – 21 pairs of chromosomes
cows – 30 pairs of chromosomes

A 1. Inherited traits are characteristics that are passed from the parents/grandparents or learned from the environment.
2. 23 pairs of chromosomes in a cell and 35,000 in genes.
3. This trait only presents when both alleles are recessive.
B1 Function of a chromosomes is determined hair color eye color, and the structure of a chromosomes is one attached to another (one from your mom and one from your dad) to make like an “X” and each line on the “X” is curled.
2. The difference in a body cell and a sex cell is in a sex cell there are only half of the amount of chromosomes.
3. What creates Down's syndrome is if someone is short a chromosome.
C1. Genes are a small part of DNA.
2. Genes are like a family recipe because genes are like a recipe for proteins then the proteins are passed from generations to generations.
3. humans have 46 Chromosomes.
horses have 32 pairs of Chromosomes
chimpanzees have 24 pairs of Chromosomes
monkey's have 21 pairs of Chromosomes
cows have 30 pairs of Chromosomes
chickens have 39 pairs of Chromosomes
bananas have 11 pairs of Chromosomes
*SNP’s are Left out, added, or substituted cells.*

C.3) Humans- 23 pairs
Horses- n/a
Chimpanzees- 24 pairs
Monkey’s- 21 pairs
