Core C, Unit D, Genetics, Blog 1

Eat your vegetables, before they eat you!

This week we will be learning about genetics. Earlier we learned about traits and characteristics and how they affect the appearance of an organism. This week we will be focusing on inherited traits, genes and alleles. We will also be setting up an experiment that shows how these inherited traits are passed from parent to offspring in plants!

KEY WORDS
Inherited Traits- An inherited trait is a characteristic passed from parents to the offspring or child through genes.

Genes- The basic unit of heredity. Different forms of genes are called alleles.

Alleles Alternative form of a gene inherited separately from each parent. (for eye color the allele might result in blue or brown eyes).

KEY CONCEPT: All organisms have genes and inherited traits.

You have 3 tasks to accomplish for this week's BLOG.

A. Read the article (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts.

1. What are inherited traits?
2. How many pairs of chromosomes are found in a human cell? How many genes?
3. How do you know if you have a recessive trait?

B. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts.

1. What is the structure & function of chromosomes?
2. What is the difference between a body cell and a sex cell?
3. How do people get Down's Syndrome?

C. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts.

1. Genes are part of what?
2. Explain how genes are like family recipes?
2. How many chromosomes do the following organisms have:

  • humans
  • horses
  • chimpanzees
  • monkey's
  • cows
  • chickens
  • bananas

*If you have time watch genetics 101, part 2 and tell me what SNP's are?

Answer 1: An inherited trait is a trait that you have from birth.
Answer 2: 23 pairs of chromosomes but up to 35,000 genes.
Answer 3: Both alleles have to be dominant and recessive for you to have a recessive trait.

B.

Answer 1: The structure of a chromosome is a long strand of DNA. It’s function is to determine traits and such.

Answer 2: In a body cell, there are 46 chromosomes, in a sex cell there are only 23 chromosomes.

Answer 3: People get Down’s Syndrome because they have an extra chromosome.

C. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts.

1. Genes are part of what?
Answer 1: Genes are a small particle of DNA.
2. Explain how genes are like family recipes?
Answer 2: Because genes are passed down from generation to generation like a family recipe.
3. How many chromosomes do the following organisms have:
Answer 3:
• humans : 46 (23 pairs)
• horses : 64 (32 pairs)
• chimpanzees : 48 (24 pairs)
• monkey's : 42 (21 pairs)
• cows : 60 (30 pairs)
• chickens : 78 (39 pairs)
• bananas : 22 (11 pairs)

An SNP is a single variation in the millions of base pairs of your DNA.

A 1. An inherited trait is a characteristic passed from parents to the offspring or child through genes
2. 23 pairs of chromosomes and about 35,000 genes
3. You know if you have a recessive trait when you behave in a domaint way.
B. 1. A Chromosome is a strand of DNA that pairs up with another pair of DNA and kenitic. The strands often tend to twist and overlap each other.
2. A body cell has 46 DNA strands or 23 Chromosomes. A sex cell has only 23 DNA strands.
3. People get Downs syndrome by having a extra chromosome.
C 1. Genes are part of DNA

2. genes are passsed down from generations and from family members
• 3. Humans-- 46
• horses --
• chimpanzees –2 sets of 24

1. What are inherited traits?
A: inherited traits are traits that are passed down from ancestors that determine people’s behavior similar to their relatives
2. How many pairs of chromosomes are found in a human cell? How many genes?
23 pairs are found, 35,000 genes are found
3. How do you know if you have a recessive trait?

1.What are inherited traits?

Ask someone where he got his red hair from and he will likely tell you that he inherited it from one of his parents or grandparents. However, when someone says that her tendency to be messy came from a grandparent, should we assume that messiness, too, is an inherited trait? Some traits exist from birth, while others are learned from our environment. Some inherited traits remain obvious, such as eye color. But there are other more obscure inherited traits that you may never have thought about, such as a certain digit's ability to bend.

2. How many pairs of chromosomes are found in a human cell? How many genes?

There are 23 chromosomes found in just one human cell and there are 35,000 genes in as human cell.

3. How do you know if you have a recessive trait?

You can find out by asking your parents if they could do a special trait then see if you could do it, if you can then you have a recessive trait.

B.

1. What is the structure & function of chromosomes?

It is a very long strand of DNA.

It tells your traits and characteristics.

Carrys genetic information.

2. What is the difference between a body cell and a sex cell?

For the body cell there is 46 chromosomes. For the sex cell there is 23 chomosomes.

3. How do people get Down's Syndrome?
People get Down Syndrome by only having an extra chromosome.

C.
1. Genes are part of what?

The Nucleous.
2. Explain how genes are like family recipes?

They are like a family recipe because they are passed down from generation to generation.
2. How many chromosomes do the following organisms have:

• humans – 46 chromosomes
• horses – 64 chromosomes
• chimpanzees-48 chromosomes
• monkey's- 42 chromosomes
• cows- 60 chromosomes
• chickens -78 chromosomes
• bananas -22 chromosomes

46 chromosomes and 23 of those are body cells and 23 are sex cells.

A)
1. Inherited traits are traits you inherit from someone connected to you by blood.
2. There are 23 pairs of Chromosomes in a Human Cell. There are up to 35000 Genes in a Human Cell
3. You can know if you have a recessive trait by having both Allies recessive by a single gene from someone connected to you by blood.
B)
1. A chromosome is a long strand of DNA that contains the information that makes individuals unique.

2. Body cells range from doing work as a heart cell to being a liver cell. Body cells have 46 chromosomes.
Sex cells are only used for reproduction.
Sex cells have 23 chromosomes, so that they can be matched up with another sex cell to form a body cell.
3. People get Down syndrome by not having enough chromosomes
C)
1. genes are part of DNA
2. Because your genes come from people connected to you by blood. You cannot get genes from someone not connected to you by blood. Kind of like a family recipe, no one else knows about it. Its passed down from generation to generation.
3. humans – 46 Chromosomes
Horses- 64 Chromosomes
chimpanzees – 48 Chromosomes
monkey's-42 Chromosomes
cows -60 Chromosomes
chickens -78 Chromosomes
Bananas-22 Chromosomes

1. What are inherited traits? Inherited traits are things you get from your parents such as hair color, eye color nose shapes and things like that.
2. How many pairs of chromosomes are found in a human cell? How many genes? A human has 23 pairs of chromosomes and 20,000 to 30,000 genes.
3. How do you know if you have a recessive trait?
You know if you have a recessive trait if you have different things like hair color lets say most people in your family have brown hair if you have red hair it would be considered a recessive trait.

B. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts.

1. What is the structure & function of chromosomes? A chromosome is a very long string of DNA that curls up around it. It determines what your hair color, eye color and things like that.
2. What is the difference between a body cell
and a sex cell?
Sex cells have half the amount of chromosomes that body cells have.

3. How do people get Down's Syndrome?
You get down’s syndrome by having an extra chromosomes.

1. Genes are part of what? Genes are 99.9% of nucleus and they are also in the mitochondria. You have about 20,000 genes. They are small parts of your dna 2. Explain how genes are like family recipes?
2. Because the genes are pased down generation to generation just like a recipe.
2. How many chromosomes do the following organisms have:

• humans 23 pairs
• horses 32 pairs

• monkey's 21 pairs
