Eat your vegetables, before they eat you! This week we will be learning about genetics. Earlier we learned about traits and characteristics and how they affect the appearance of an organism. This week we will be focusing on inherited traits, genes and alleles. We will also be setting up an experiment that shows how these inherited traits are passed from parent to offspring in plants! KEY WORDS Inherited Traits- An inherited trait is a characteristic passed from parents to the offspring or child through genes. Genes- The basic unit of heredity. Different forms of genes are called alleles. Alleles- Alternative form of a gene inherited separately from each parent. (for eye color the allele might result in blue or brown eyes). KEY CONCEPT: All organisms have genes and inherited traits. You have 3 tasks to accomplish for this week's BLOG. A. Read the article (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts. 1. What are inherited traits? 2. How many pairs of chromosomes are found in a human cell? How many genes? 3. How do you know if you have a recessive trait? B. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts. 1. What is the structure & function of chromosomes? 2. What is the difference between a body cell and a sex cell? 3. How do people get Down's Syndrome? C. Watch the video (use the link) and answer the following questions in complete thoughts. 1. Genes are part of what? 2. Explain how genes are like family recipes? 2. How many chromosomes do the following organisms have:

1.A) All complex living things, plants, animals and humans contain materials that allow them to past to there off spring. Thease are called inherited traits.
B)All human cells contain just 23 pairs of chromosomes but may contain up to 35,000 genes.
C)You know you recive a trait when both allels are recessive.
2.A)The structer is 2 DNA strans combined making an x shape. And the fuctions are how tall you are and how you act. Also they hold your genes.
B) the body sell is how you look and act. the sex sell is your gender.
C) They Have one more chromason then you normaly have.
3. A) Genes are part of the nucloues in a cell.
B) They are like family recipes because they are passed down from genration from genration.
C)They have four each.

a1. Inherited traits are something you are born with and inherit from someone you are related to.For example eye color or skin tone Also you cannot change it, and you cannot learn it you are born with it
a2. 23 pairs of chromosomes are found in a human cell. There are 35,000 genes.
a3. You know if you have a recessive trait by, when both alleles are recessive.
b1. The structure of a chromosome is a long DNA. It curls us together looking somewhat like an x, it is two DNA strands hooked up together. The function of the chromosome is to hold together the DNA and give traits to the kids from their mom and dad.
b2. The difference between a body cell and a sex cell is the body has 46 chromosomes total, and you receive half from your mom and other from your dad.
b3. People get Down’s syndrome from having one extra chromosome. From either one of the parents the mom or dad, you should get the equal amount 23 from each parent but sometimes that does not work and you get one extra from either parent.
c1. Genes are a part of short strands of DNA.
c2. Genes are like family recipes by being passed down from people to parents and from generation to generation and so on.
c3.
The following organisms have this many pairs of chromosomes…
Humans- 23 pairs
Horses-n/a
Chimpanzees- 24 pairs
Monkeys- 21 pairs
Cows- 30 pairs
Chickens-39 pairs
Bananas-11pairs

A) Inherited traits are specific things that a person inherits from their parent, or grandparent, or even uncles and aunts. Inheritance is to receive a specific trait from relatives. A human cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, and may contain up to 35,000 genes. You know that you have a recessive trait when the recessive trait only presents when both alleles are recessive.
B) A chromosome is a very long strand of DNA; it is also two DNA strands hooked together when curled. Looks like and ‘X’, carries genetic information which determines your eye color, hair color, height and so on. In a body cell, there are 46 chromosomes that it contains; they are paired up into 23 groups. Half genetic information comes from your mom, and the other half comes from your dad, in sperm cells and egg cells that go to fertilize and egg there is only half the number of chromosomes in each cell, when they join they create a human being and equals 46 chromosomes all together . An extra chromosome is what creates Down syndrome in people.
Genes are small parts of a molecule called DNA.
Not done finish later.
A.) 1. Inherited traits are what you get from birth. For example an inherited trait could be eye color or hair color. People get these traits from parents or a grandparent that is an inherited trait.
2. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in the human body and there are up to 35,000 genes in the human body.
3. You know if you have a recessive trait if both alleles are recessive.
B.)1. The structure of a chromosome is that it’s a long strand of DNA that curls up and attach with another strand of chromosomes. They form kind of like an X shape. The function of chromosomes is to hold together the DNA and to give traits to babies from their mom and dad.
2. The difference between a body cell and a sex cell is that your body has 46 chromosomes total. You get 23 chromosomes from your mom and 23 chromosomes from your dad, so you have some traits from your mom and traits from your dad.
3. You get down syndrome from having one extra chromosome from one of the parents. You’re supposed to have 23 chromosomes form each parent but sometimes things get messed up and some people get one extra. If you get one extra chromosome these are the people that have down syndrome.
C.) 1.) Genes are a part of small parts of DNA.
2. They are like recipes because they are passed down from generation to generation. For example, from grandparent to parent to child(etc.).
3. Humans- 23 pairs
Horses- N/A
Chimps- 24 pairs
Monkeys- 21 pairs
Cows- 30 pairs

1. Inherited traits are genes, or characteristics you can get from your family. 2. A human cell contains just 23 pairs of chromosomes. May contain up to 35,000 genes. 3. A1. Inherited traits are characteristics of a parent which is being passed to its offspring
through herdity.
A2. There are 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs are in a human cell , but may contian up to 35,000
genes .
A3. You can only get a recessive trait when both your parents are recessive . You must
have a single gene , when more then a single gene it turns into a trait and other more
complicated interactions .
B1. The structure of a chromosome is long strain of DNA , it curls up on it's self , it looks
like an X . The function of a chromosome is to create you , this is how you are , your
eyes , nose , face shape , body shape , everything you get from a chromosome . You can also
get dunsundrum from these .
B2. A body cell has 46 chromosomes and a sex cell does not
B3. People get down syndrome by having a extra chromosome
C1. Genes are a part of cells
C2. Genes are like family recipes. They are passed down from every generation
C3. Humans have 23 chromosomes, Monkeys have 21 chromosomes, Cows have 30 chromosomes, Chickens have 39 chromosomes, Bananas have 11 chromosomes, and Chimpanzees have 24 chromosomes.
SNP’s are Single Nucleotide Polymorphism. SNP's are how you pass genetics to your children and how they pass it to their children.

B1: A chromosones function is to determine traits and the structure are 2 stands of DNA crossed.
B2: A body cell is half of your mom and half the dad but a sex cell is not a presice amount.
B3: You get down syndrame it is because you have 2 of one chromosone.
C1:Genes are part of long strands od DNA
C2: There are passed down from generation to generation.
