Core A, wk 2

A.  I would like for you to reflect or summarize what we've learned from activities 1 (Save Fred) and 2 (The Pellegra Story). Please include 3 of the following key words into your comments: Hypothesis, scientific method, observation, inference, and trade-off. Your response should touch on the key themes highlighted above and should be at least a paragraph in length.

B.  Dr. Joseph Goldberger & the war on Pellegra has a much deeper story than what we discussed in class.  Please use the link below to add to your knowledge of  this nutritional disease.  Give 3 additional facts about how Dr. Goldberger solved this horrible disease.

I learned that Pellagra was a disease casued by bad nutrition. i also learned that it was very deadly disease and what caused it. From the activity saving fred I learned that you need more than 1 hypothesis to figure out how to do something. I also learned two new words. Trade-off and observation.

I learned that pellagra was a teriable diseace in 1914. People would get it from a bad diet, only eating a certin food every day and get sick. From the activity save Fred i learned that you need to do more than a hypotheis. You also have to work with a partener and work together.

A) During the first week of school we have learned that science is used everyday in situations. In our first experiment we had to "Save Fred" from drowning in the ocean and get him through his "life raft" and back in his boat. In this experiment we learned that our scientific method of how we got Fred through his life raft was different from how other groups may have done it. In "The Pellegra Story," we had to make a hypothesis about the cause of Pellegra. Our hypothesis was that if people didn't eat a balanced diet then they would get Pellagra. We made obsevations in the video we watched and it proved that our hypothesis was correct.

Hunter B. Dr. Goldbergers hypothesis was that Pelagra was that it was a nutritional disease. He observed this by doing a test on the prisoners and they had to do a trade off because if they did the exoierement they would get out of jail but get pelagra. Pelagra caused Halucination, Rashes and insanity.

A. From the first day of school when we did the activity "Save Fred" we had to make a hypothesis on how we could save Fred. When we did the activity "Pellagra" we learned what Dr. Golderberger had cured the sick poeple, he had made observations and inferences on the people who had pellagra.

B. Dr. Goldberger injected himself with the blood of the poeple who had the disease, Pellagra. He also rubbed the sick poeple's nose and throat fluids on himself. Also Dr. Goldberger took the scabs off the ill poeple and put them in a pill capsul and ate them and he still didn't get Pellagra. So, Dr. Goldberger came up with a conclusion that the poeple were ill because of they weren't getting enough nutrition, so Dr. Goldberger gave convicts Pellagra then cured them back to being healthy.

A.On the first day of school "Save Fred" we had to make a hypothesis to figure out a way to save Fred. When we did the activity "Pellegra" we had to make a observation on what to write. Dr. Goldberger made observations and inferences on people to find what was happening with the people who caught Pellegra.

B.What Dr. Goldberger did was he took 5mL of blood from a convict who had Pellegra and injected it into himself. He also scraped scabes off of the sick and put them in a pilland swallowed them. he also took nose and throat fluids and rubbed them on his skin andstill didnot get the disease

In activity 1 (save fred) we had to get Fred (Gummy Worm) into the life preserver (Lifesaver). We where introduced to Hypothesis, Scientific Method, and Observations. In activity 2 (The Pellegra Story) we learned about Pellegra and what it is caused by. Pellegra is caused by corn foods like corn bread, which causes a rash and insanity. After this activity we learned about inferences and trade offs.

Fact 1: Dr. Goldberger injected 5 cubic centimeters of a person with pellegra's blood into his arm
Fact 2: 10,000 deaths related to Pellegra.
Fact 3: 100,000 Pellegra Cases

I learned that pellagra was a disease cause by bad nutrition/diet. The disease was caused by diet and not germs. The tenant farmers and mill workers caused disease also because they were always around corn. There was diet deficient in niacin.

Question A. Saving Fred. He was stranded in the ocean sitting on top of a boat with a life perserver under it. We had to put the life perserver on him using only 4 paper clips, and without touching him.
Question B. Pellagra. It was a diesease that was caused by eating unhealthy. D.R. Goldberger figured out that, and he tried an experiment and fed people with pellagra healthy food, and soon they got better.

Part A.

In Activity 1, Save fred was about learning to approach problems. Like in the save fred we had to get fred in the life preserver. To do so, you could have done diffrent things. Our hypthesis was that you could have slipped the worm into the life saver by streching it out with the two toothpicks, Then pushing the worm through with the paperclip. In activity 2 about Pellegra, I learned that Pellegra is a disease which is caused by not getting nutiation in your diet. When Dr. Goldsberger exsperimented, he only gave the slaves corn, and some pork to see if they would get Pellegra proving he was right. Though it was a trade off, because the slaves got off of work, but also had the chance to recieve a dieasese.

A. In activity 1 we learned that there is only 1 true scientific method, but there are many different ways scientists solve problems. We also learned that one way to solve a problem may not always be the best way to solve another problem.

Answer: He changed peoples diets. because he believed that the diets was what caused it.!!!

A. I learned that Pellagra was a nutrisous disease. Also I learned from saving fred that sometimes you will need more than one strategy. I learned key words like hypothesis, trade-off,inference, and others.
B. I also learned that he tested his theory on two orphans. Also two inmates who werent talked about. Finally he did the filthy party.

A)During this first week of school I have learned a lot in all my classes but I have to say that I have learned the most new things in this science class. One of the things I learned about was Pellagra, I learned that it was a horrible disease that killed many lower class people, I learned that it was caused by the southern diet, and how all the lower class people could only afford to eat was different types of corn, such as corn, corn mush and corn bread. I also learned that an inference is like an observation. Also in this class I participated in an activity called Save Fred, I learned from this activity that is takes more than a hypothesis to find the solution you have to work with a group. Things we did in this experiment Save Fred,my partner and I put him in his life raft, using only paper clips. A word that I learned was trade-off it means that you give something to someone and then you get something back from them.

A) I learned how to strategize and observe in save Fred. I also learned from the Fred experiment that you and your partner need to work together. I learned that u need to make Hypothesis and Inferences and observations in the Pellagra story. I also learned that you can get Pellagra by eating only corn for your diet. I also learned that you can cure Pellagra be eating right. A)

B) Dr. Goldberger was about finding out what caused Pellagra and if it was contagious. He discovered that it wasn’t contagious because he noticed that all the workers at the hospital didn’t catch Pellagra and that all the poor people had it not the rich. He also discovered that it was the poor people’s diet that was giving them Pellagra. He noticed if they ate better foods then they would be cured. So to complete his conclusion he took some people from a jail and feed them corn for a while and they got Pellagra. Then he gave them better foods so they were cured. B)

Part B.

Dr. Goldberger experimented on eleven volunteer prisoners at the Rankin State Prison Farm. He Told them if they would eat on a corn based diet he could get them out of the work they had to do. Six of the eleven men ended up showing pellagra rashes after 5 months. This proved Dr. Goldbergers thoery, but people still didnt believe him.

Isaac M,core A I think from save fred I learned that if you have more people trying to save Fred its easier.I learned that making observations hepls for solving problems.Like when Dr.Goldburger was trying to find the cause for pellagra he made a couple observations and inferences. He gave healty people the diet of the pellagra victims. He injected blood ofthe victims into his own to prove it was not a germinal disease. He pointed out that the nurses in the hospitals werent getting the disease.

I learned how to make a true hypothesis and that all scientists think different ways. There is one scientific method but not all people do it the same way. I also learned that you have to have good evidence before you can come up with a good conclusion.

Dr. Goldberger injected himself with 5 cm. of pellagrin's blood. He also swabbed out the nose and throat of someone with pellegra and swabbed it in his nose and throat. Dr. Goldberger and his assistant swalled capsules full of the scabs off of pellagrin's rashes. He did all of this to prove that Pellegra was not caused by a germ.

A)This year in science so far we have done labs "Save Fred". By doing the lab "Save Fred" we learned about making a hypothesis. We made an hypothesis about what steps we were going to do in order to save Fred from falling into the water. We also made an observation during the lab that if you strech out the life saver you can save Fred.
B)Dr.Goldberger studied the people that had got the disease. He then
realized that pellagra was a diet diesease and was not caused by germs which many people had though.

B)I learned that Pellegra killed many Southerners in the early 20th century. I also leanred that a lot of people didn't like Dr.Goldberger's theories or methods and that it was a dietary disorder, not caused by germs.

Brianna said...

A) I leaned that Pellegra is a disease. My hypothesis is that pellegra was caused by corn and a bad diet. And also that people didnt get enough nutrition.

A) In save Fred you and a partner have too try and get Fred into his life saver and try to get him in his boat. In the pellegra story Dr. Goldberger's hypothesyis was that pellagra was caused by a poor diet.

B) The way Dr.Goldberger solved the deiseise by telling people that it was caused by a poor diet, and that it wasn't cuased by germs or animals
