Answer A: In the two activities we’ve done so far, we have learned that there are many different scientific methods, and that not all scientists use the same methods. We also learned that Joseph Goldberger had a difficult problem, solving pellagra, and he made a hypothesis, which ended up being right. He also made many different observations about the victims of pellagra.

Answer B:
1.He believed that land reform was necessary, which was accomplished when boll weevils destroyed the cotton plants, forcing them to grow different crops.
2.He also discovered that a small amount of brewer’s yeast worked as effectively and cheaper than fresh meat, milk, and vegetables.
3.He also began testing on dogs after learning that their black tongue disease was the equivalent to pellagra.

A: During activity one we learned about the words Hypothesis, observation, inference. We also learned about pellagra which is a really bad rash. We learned to use the scientific method for science problems. We learned about Observations and Inferences. They are different and they are different to identify.
B: Dr. Goldberger found out that people who ate food that lacked vitamins got pellagra. He also learned that people who changed their diet was cured. And people who wore clean clothes every day did not get pellagra.

A. We learned in the activity Save Fred that you have to use scientific method and observation. In The Pellagra Story we learned how you have to trade off, Dr.Goldberger did a tradeoff he used his time to find a diseases.

B. Dr.Goldberger helped solve the dieses by proving that it was not contagious.
Dr.Goldberger helped solve the Pellagra because he proved it was a nutritional disease.
Dr.Goldberger cured the disease because he fed them milk and fresh fruits.

A. What I have learned from save Fred is observation and planning before and after we were finished or hypothesis. I liked it because it makes me infer what we should do. B. What I learned from the pellagra is some parts of the scientific method and some important health tips and before I saw the video I made a hypothesis. And I thought had a thought that pellagra was from not taking a shower.

1. Save Fred, My hypothesis was that it would work to unfold the paperclip and stick it under the cup so I could get the life saver have my partner pick up Fred with another and then flip the cup over. My hypothesis was wrong. We ended up using all of the paper clips and Fred drowned once. 2. The Pellagra Story, Dr. Goldberger made the inference that only poor people got pellagra because what he first saw was poor people in corn and cotton fields that had pellagra. Then he made the observation that in orphanages and jails it was only the children and jail mates that had, had pellagra, not the staff members.

B. Pellagra was caused by poor diet and not enough protein. Tenant farmers and mill workers had the deficient diet that caused this disease. In the south at that time they ate a lot of bread and corn. Poor people such as orphans and farmers couldn’t afford to buy and eat veggies. So Goldberger did a test where he gave orphans veggies and those who had pellagra got better. Another thing he did was take jail mates put them in a clean invironment with clean cloths and nets over the windows so bugs couldn’t get in but fed them corn and fattening foods, they ended up getting pellagra. For him to prove it wasn’t a germ issue he would scrap scabs from people who had pellagra and ate them to prove that pellagra was not a germ issue.

Question A
In activity 1 we learned how to use a hypothesis and what a hypothesis is. We also learned how to use a hypothesis to help us work to figure out how to save Fred, get him in the boat without drawing in the water. In activity 2 we learned how Dr. Goldberger used the scientific method to find out what caused how pellagra was happening. We had to make an observation about his work. We also did tradeoffs about it too.

Question B
1 fact that he used was Goldberger knew from his years of experience working on infectious diseases that germs did not distinguish between inmates and employees. Another fact is Goldberger had speculated that spoiled maize caused pellagra. Finally is that Goldberger found no evidence for that hypothesis, but diet certainly seemed the crucial factor.

A:

In our first experiment Save Fred, one of the things that we had to figure out was if there was only one scientific method. At the end of the experiment, my partner and I figured out that there is more than one scientific method rather than one. Before we started the procedure, me and my partner made a hypothesis on how to save Fred. In the very end we obviously saved Fred.
The next procedure we had to do was watch a video called “The Pellegra Story.” Some of the stuff we had to do during the Pellegra Story was that we had to list some trade-offs, name some observations and inferences. The Pellegra Story is about a rare disease which causes skin irritation and could make you a little bit crazy. It also includes a change in diet.

B:

Goldberger did some research and he realized that diet and germs did not cause that disease. When he traveled south of the United States, he tried to cure the orphans and the prisoners. He went to a farm and the farmers found a cure to make the patients feel better and cure the disease a lot faster than what was supposed to happen.

In the Save Fred experiment you had to use a hypothesis to make a plan to get the life saver on to Fred’s body so that he wouldn’t die. In the pellagra story Dr. Goldberger made an observation that everyone poor had pellagra an also made an inference that it was the corn products that they were eating made them sick. Interesting facts about Dr. Goldberger is, he worked in the United States marine hospital; he immigrated from central Europe and was a Jewish doctor. core D

a. in activity 1 I learned how to make a hypothesis on how Fred was going to fit through the hole without using my hands. In activity 2 I learned how to make an inference and an observation. I learned this by what Dr.Goldberger did when he discovered a cure for pellagra.

On April 26, 1916 Dr.Goldberger injected five cubic centimeters of a pellagrin's blood into the arm of his assistant, Dr. George Wheeler. Then they swabbed out the secretions of a pellagrin's nose and throat and rubbed them into their own noses and throats. They swallowed capsules containing scabs of pellagrins' rashes. Between 1902 and 1906, Goldberger heroically battled epidemic diseases. He fought yellow fever in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Mississippi, and Louisiana, contracting the disease himself His efforts earned him a promotion to the rank of Passed Assistant Surgeon in 1904.

A) In activity one, save Fred we learned about how to make hypothesis and test them. By “Saving Fred” from drowning we also had to use the scientific method. We used the scientific method to figure out how we got Fred in the life raft and safely in the back in the boat. Also I observed that there is more than one way to get Fred in the life savor. What I concluded from that is there are multiple ways to do get the final product of experiments. In The Pellegra Story we made a hypothesis about what is causing Pellegra .Our hypothesis was if you do not eat a balanced diet you will get Pellegra. We also made observations about on this movie we watched and showed that our hypothesis was correct.
B) Another additional fact about how Dr. Goldberger solved Pellegra is, he injected five cubic centimeters pellagrins blood into the arm of his assistant, Dr. George Wheeler. Another fact is, he swabbed a pellagrins nose and trouat and rubbed them in his. He still did not receive Pellgra . The last fact is he and his assistant swolled scabes and rashes of the pellagrins people.

A: In the two activities we have done, we have found out there are multiple scientific methods, and that not everybody uses the same methods to figure things out. We learned from Save Fred is that we needed a plan to figure out a way to save fred by getting the life preserver around him. We also learned that Dr. Goldberger had a problem with figuring out what caused the disease Pellagra was caused by and how to cure it. He made many different observations on people who had the disease and when he made a hypothesis about Pellagra, it was right.

B:
1.Dr. Goldberger discovered that the disease Pellagra was not contagious.
2. Dr. Goldberger discovered that Pellagra was caused by a poor diet and was most common in jails and orphanages.
3. Dr. Goldberger found the cure for Pellagra by changing peoples diets.

Sometimes in scientific experiments you have to use trade- offs. In save Fred we realized we had to make observations and inferences. In the Pellegra Story, we realized that Dr. Goldberger that we had to use trade- offs.

B.Goldberger changed the diets of orphans and other people who were having a terrible food diet with no nutrition. He Put jail people in a clean house, washed the clothes and bed sheets every day, scrubbed the walls and the house every day, and changed their diets. He came to a conclusion that it was the diets, the non nutrition corn diet.

Question C
In Activity 1 (save Fred) we had to use a scientific method to help Fred into the life saver, but before we used the scientific method, we had to observe the situation such as the boat is tipped over, the life saver is under the boat and Fred is on top of the boat. In the Pellegra story we had to make an observation. Dr. Goldberger observed that the people who had Pellgra had poor diets which mostly consisted of corn products. That lead him to test if the disease is infectious, in which he found that it was not so he inferred from the observations and the tests that the disease is caused by poor diet and not infection, bacteria, animals, or bugs.

Question B
1. Dr. Goldberger injected 5 cubic centimeters of pellegrin’s blood into his assistant’s (Dr. George Wheeler) arm.
2. Dr. Wheeler injected 6 centimeters of the blood into Dr. Goldberger.
3. They swallowed capsules containing scabs of pellagrins' rashes.
4. They swabbed out the secretions of a pellagrin's nose and throat and rubbed them into their own noses and throats.

A)In activity one "save fred" my partner and I had to make a hypothesis on how to fit fred threw the life saver. We went threw a run through of what we were going to do and made and made a couple inferences on what we could do to get Fred back in the boat. In Activity two "pellagra", we watched a video and observed some of the things Dr. Goldberger did to prove his scientific method was correct. He observed people and found the cause was poor nutrition.

B) Dr.Goldberger helped solve the dieses by proving that it was not contagious by,
* He also began laboratory experiments on dogs after learning that black tongue disease was the canine equivalent of pellagra.
* Wheeler shot six centimeters of such blood into Goldberger.
* They swabbed out the secretions of a pellagrin's nose and throat and rubbed them into their own noses and throats,
None of the volunteers got pellagra.

B. On April 26, 1916 he injected 5 centimeters of the pelegrin`s into the arm of Dr. George Wheeler. Dr. Goldberger experimented on eleven healthy prisoners at Rankin State Farm in 1915 and in return for participation they ate corn as there diet. Then six out of eleven showed a rash after 5 months. Between 1902 and 1906, Golberger faced epidemic disease. He had fought yellow fever in many states and in return he had earned a promotion of Past Assistants Surgeon in 1904.

A. In activity 1 [Save Fred] I learned how to make a hypothesis on how Fred was going to fit through the whole of the life saver with out touching the worm with are hands. In activity 2 [The Pellagra Story] I learned that Mr. Goldberger observed and he used his observing to infer his take on the pellagra story.

B. 1. On April 26 1916 Dr Goldberger injected him self and his assistant Dr George Wheeler with 5 cubic centimeters of pellagra’s blood. Then after that, they swabbed out the throats and noses of diseased people with pellagra and rubbed it onto their own throats and noses.
2. He learned that small amount of dried brewer's yeast prevented the disease as effectively and more cheaply than fresh, lean meat, milk, and vegetables.
3. He also began laboratory experiments on dogs after learning that black tongue disease was the canine equivalent of pellagra.

B. 1. He proved the disease was caused by deitary issues instead of any thing else by giving one group of people corn based meals (group 1), and one group got meat, milk and other healthy items (Group 2). group two was cured but group one stayed sick this proved it was from diets. which then resulted in giving all patients better diets.

2. to prove it was not contagious he swabed a patients throght and nose then swabed himself with the same one, then took another patient's blood and injected it into himself and he did not get sick.

3. He did not get pellagra when he picked scabs off of patient's and put on himself.

Activity 1: In activity 1 we learned how hard it is to do what some scientists have to do and that scientists have to work together to get stuff done. We observed what we had to do and then solved the problem together.
Activity 2: Dr. Joseph Goldenberger hypothesized what he wanted to figure out and used scientific method to perform what he wanted to do to figure out the solution. After performing several tests he inferred that people get Pellegra from their diet and nutrition.

B.
He experimented on Mississippi prisoners, had filth parties, experimented on dogs, and also observed southern life styles.

In activity 1 “Save Fred” we leaned different scientific methods to do during your procedure for example you should make a plan or draw what your going to do. In “The Pellegra Story” I learned how to infer and observe things and if your statement has reasoning it could be a possibility.

B.

Three more facts about the pellagra story are...

1. One other theory that an Italian scientist had was that spoiled maize caused pellagra.

2. Other people who didn't belive Dr. Goldburgers theory thought his theory was a fraud.

3. To prove his theory he had "Fifth Parties" witch are the people who had joined him. He did all diffrent kinds of experiments to prove his theory. For example, Dr. Goldburg took a cotten swab and swabed sullivia from the peoples mouthes who had pellagra and put a sample of the sullivia in his mouth and his "Fifth Parties" mouthes.

i learned that in save fred that a hypothosis can help you in a project.

And what i learnd about the pallegra story is that Dr. Joseph has observed pallergra and has leardned and seen what caused it. and changed there diets and the prisoners got a trade off cause they got clean cloths clean every thing but bad food.

Answer A: What I have learned from activity 1 and 2 are some definitions and there meaning. In activity 2 the pellagra story Dr. Joseph Goldberger proved that his hypothesis was right that poor nutrition was the reason of pellagra. His observation was to give people healthier food to see if it made people better. There was many more scientific methods that he tried but only some succeeded.

Answer B: 1. He did observations on people who had pellagra to see what causes the disease
2. He figured out where the disease came from or where it occurred the most.
3. He found out that it wasn’t germs didn’t caused it so he gave people better diets and it started to work.

Faith G said...

A. My summary for lessons 1 and 2 are they both deal with problems. Like with Fred, he was trapped on top of a boat and we had to save his life without touching him. Also we couldn’t set him down because the table was the sea and he would of drown. So we had to figure out how to get Fred in the life saver without touching him or setting him down. when we got done we had to do write down or HYPOTHESIS. Also with the pellagra story, pellagra started because of lack of nutrition and only the poor and orphans had this because they couldn't afford food. Also Dr. Goldberger figured this out by changing their diet, and they got better. After this we had to do OBSERVATIONS and INFERENCES.

B. Dr. Goldenberger solved this horrible problem by: 1.He went to go see mental hospitals, orphanages, and cotton mill towns. This then convinced him that it wasn't a germ because the staff didn't get it. 2. Lombroso had speculated that spoiled maize caused pellegra. It says
that Dr. Goldenberger found no evidence for the hypothesis. But he saidthat diet was a crutial factor with pellegra. When the poor started eating fresh meat, milk and vegitables they started to heal.3. Then the people without the disease who ate the new diet did not contract pellegra. Also Dr. Goldberger threw filth parties, filth parties are when people with pellegra would go somewhere and same with voulenteers. The voulenteers would swabb there throats,in there noses, then the voulenteers would swabb it in there noses and throats ! Thats three ways Dr. Goldenberger solved this horrible disease.

With activity 1 I learned that there is more than one specific scientific method. In activity 2 I learned that Dr. Goldberger's hypothesis was correct. In order to get the correct hypothesis he had observations and infrences to add to his hypothesis to make it correct.
B)
1. Dr. Goldberger found out that bad diet (not germs) caused Pellegra. And the only reason the Southern people got Pellegra was because they only ate corn and other non-cleaan food crops.
2. Aftering doing an experiment on changing everything in the person with Pellegras life except the diet. He then gave the people with Pellegra brew yeast which worked as a cure and it also was cheaper than meat, milk, and vegetibles.
3. Dr. Goldberger believed that cleaning the crops was necessary when the boll weevils ruined the cotton fields making the farmers have to plant knew crops.
