Core B, wk 2

A.  I would like for you to reflect or summarize what we've learned from activities 1 (Save Fred) and 2 (The Pellegra Story). Please include 3 of the following key words into your comments: Hypothesis, scientific method, observation, inference, and trade-off. Your response should touch on the key themes highlighted above and should be at least a paragraph in length.

B.  Dr. Joseph Goldberger & the war on Pellegra has a much deeper story than what we discussed in class.  Please use the link below to add to your knowledge of this nutritional disease.  Give 3 additional facts about how Dr. Goldberger solved this horrible disease.

What I learned in the last two activities is how to use a scientific method to figure out how to save Fred. The scientific method of the experiment was to make a hypothesis and then make a list in order how to save Fred and. I also made an inference after doing the experiment which was that if my partner and I stretched out the life preserver, then we would be able to fit Fred into it. When I learned about the disease called pellagra, I found out about a man who studied it. He was Dr. Goldberger. He made observations of the people who had the disease and noticed that they had cut and scabs on their skin and they were all poor, therefore they could not afford healthier food. Dr. Goldberger did an experiment in which he fed the orphan inch good food such as vegetable, milk, and meat and he fed the prison corn. His inference of the experiment was that the disease was not caused by germs but by the people’s diet.

In save Fred, we used our hypothesis which was to stretch the life saver apart with the paper clips and then another group member was going to put Fred into the life saver, we used that to try and figure out how to save Fred and we did save him. In the Pellegra Story we learned that Dr. Goldberger observed how the poor people ate and lived in comparison to the rich people, we also learned that Dr. Goldberger asked then prisoners to do the experiment where he gave the prisoners Pellegra and if they survived then they got to get out of prison and the trade off was that they get Pellegra but they still get out of prison if they survived.

A. In the activity 1 and 2 I learned about a new disease that was disgusting but interesting. Also I learned that there are many different ways to solve a problem. Also how to make a hypothesis like an if or then. Also how the scientific method is used in a different situation. Also in the movie for pellagra there are tradeoffs from being in the experiment.
B. He also stepped on Southern pride when he linked the poverty of Southern sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and mill workers to the deficient diet that caused pellagra. But during the early part of the 20th-century, pellagra, a disease that results from a diet deficient in niacin killed, many poor Southerners. Wheeler shot six centimeters of such blood into Goldberger. Then they swabbed out the secretions of a pellagrin's nose and throat and rubbed them into their own noses and throats. They swallowed capsules containing scabs of pellagrins' rashes.

What I have learned this week in science is how to write a hypothesis in complete form by talking about saving Fred. Also I have learned how to use a scientific method while trying to save Fred by creating a method of how to put a life preserver on him. Then I learned about pellagra. I learned about a man who studied the disease and how he tried to solve it. Dr.Goldberger studied scabs and sores and made observations and inferences about the people who had the disease. I watched a video about how Dr. Goldberger had found out how to cure the disease but nobody believed his evidence. The disease was really not caused by germs it was caused by the way people ate.

A. We have learned that hypothesis is an if and then statement. Also it is part of an experiment.
An inference is a logical conclusion based on an observation. In the activity save Fred we had to solve it by using an hypostasis. A hypostasis is an expiation based on observed facts. We also learned how pellagra started and how it was cured.
B. Glodburger believed necessary to eliminate pellagra was accomplished not by scientific reasoning but by the invasion of boil weevils.
By growing more food crops farmers improved there diets and suffered less from pellagra.
Goldbuger learned that small amount of dried brewers yeast prevented the disease.

B.Dr. Joseph Goldberger was all about figuring out what caused pellagra and if it was contagious.
Some of the ways he figured out that it was not contagious was, all the staff members that were around the sick patient’s never got sick and they would not wear masks or any protection, so there for it was not contagious. Dr. Joseph Goldberger also observed how only the poor people was catching pellagra, so Dr. Joseph Goldberger looked at what differences that poor people did and what higher class people did. He noticed that poor people’s diets were way different from the higher class peoples and higher class people would eat different things but lower class people would eat the same thing every day and that’s how Dr. Goldberger figured it out how they had gotten pellagra, but first he had to make sure that was the truth so he took a few sick patience and they had gotten better then he took non sick people from the jail and put them on poor people’s diets and they had gotten sick so that is how Dr. Joseph Golberger figured out how to cure pellagra

In the United States, pellagra has often been called the disease of the four D's. Between 1907 and 1940, approximately three million Americans contracted pellagra and 100,000 of them died. Goldberger found no evidence for that hypothesis, but diet certainly seemed the crucial factor. Shipments of food which Goldberger had requested from Washington were provided to children in two Mississippi orphanages and to inmates at the Georgia State Asylum. Results were dramatic; those fed a diet of fresh meat, milk and vegetables instead of a com-based diet recovered from pellagra. Those without the disease who ate the new diet did not contract pellagra.

Mia G said...

B- The way that Dr. Goldberger solved the disease was that he never did precisely discover what was missing from the diets of pellagrins. He also began laboratory experiments on dogs after learning that black tongue disease was the canine equivalent of pellagra. Dr. Goldberger traveled the Mississippi valley collecting statistical data on every aspect of Southern life for their epidemiological studies while delivering jeremiads against the system that left the poor too destitute to eat a healthy diet. Another doctor had speculated that spoiled maize caused pellagra.

A) In the first week of school we have done two activities the first one was “Save Fred.” In save Fred we had to make a hypothesis about how to save Fred. In save Fred we had to get Fred back into his boat without dropping him. I made my hypothesis based on observed facts. Our second active was the pellagra story. In the story the pellagra I learned that it is a very bad disease and it’s caused by eating too much corn. And if can be cured be eating better by a better diet. Another thing I learned was the trade-offs, an example of a trade off is that the prisoners agreed to be a part of the experiment in exchange for their freedom.

What I have learned in the past two activities, 'Save Fred'and 'The Pallegra Story'is that in order to actually figure out how to 'Save Fred' is to develop a hypothesis. My hypothesis consisted of different ways to save fred, for instance stretching fred and the lifesaver out so that I could 'Save Fred'. I had used the scientific method to figure out how to save fred, which meant using a hypothesis. In the end, me and my partner had infered that if we had streteched out the lifesaver, fred or both that we would be able to easily fit fred through the lifesaver with the tools that were provided even if they were not very easy to handle.
In the second activity in class about Pallegra I had learned that a Scientist, Dr. Goldberger, had headed to the south where he had heard stories about many southerners getting sick for reasons unknown. Dr. Goldberger had stayed in the south to observe southerners and soon compared how the poor people lived and ate compared to the rich. Dr. Goldberger had inferred that it was not a germ disease in which many people had though caused the symptoms of Pallegra which included sores, scabs and insanity, no, Dr. Goldberger had inferred that Pallegra was in fact a nutritional disease caused by the lack of a good nutritional diet. Dr.Goldberger had also inferred that it was only the poor that had developed Pallegra because they could not afford meat, milk and other nutritional foods that the rich had come to eat, Therefor Dr. Goldberger had began running tests giving orphans a better diet instead of eating corn which had began the whole concept of Pallegra. Dr. Goldberger had realized that his hypothesis was correct, giving the orphans a better diet had made them better in health. Dr. Goldberger did the opposite for a prison in which he had given the healthy prisoners trade-off, if the prisoners had agreed to being in Dr. Goldbergers study for the whole time they would be set free for there effort.
In the end Dr. Goldberger had inferred that Pallegra was not a germ disease rather it was a nutritional disease caused by the lack of nutrition.

What I learned in the last 2 activities are is how to use scientific method which is just like a thought out plan based on your observation. In the activity saving Fred i used a scientific method on how to get Fred into the life preserver onto Fred. Or hypothesis was to stretch out the life preserve and slid Fred through. In the pellagra activity I learned how Dr. Goldberger studied the eating habits of the poor and the rich. The trade of was if he gave the the prisoners pellagra they would get out of jail if they survived.

A) In activity one, save Fred we learned about how to make hypothesis and test them. By “Saving Fred” from drowning we also had to use the scientific method. We used the scientific method to figure out how we got Fred in the life raft and safely in the back in the boat. Also I observed that there is more than one way to get Fred in the life savor. What I concluded from that is there are multiple ways to do get the final product of experiments. In The Pellegra Story we made a hypothesis about what is causing Pellegra .Our hypothesis was if you do not eat a balanced diet you will get Pellegra. We also made observations about on this movie we watched and showed that our hypothesis was correct.
B) Another additional fact about how Dr. Goldberger solved Pellegra is, he injected five cubic centimeters pellagrins blood into the arm of his assistant, Dr. George Wheeler. Another fact is, he swabbed a pellagrins nose and trouat and rubbed them in his. He still did not receive Pellgra . The last fact is he and his assistant swolled scabes and rashes of the pellagrins people.

A. In Save Fred we used Hypothesis an if and then statement. Scientific Methods are all different. We were using observation, using your senses to an experiment using prisoners by getting out of jail for a good thing, and they would have to be experimented on.
B. Three new facts I just learned are Pellegra was once called mal de la rosa, was mistaken by leprosy and Dr. Goldberger went to school for engineering but studied the people with Pellegra.

A. Our experiments with the labs save Fred and the Pellegra story; we used our scientific method to get Fred into the life preserver without giving him a slow and painful death. My hypothesis for the save Fred experiment was if I stretch the life preserver I will be able to get Fred into the life preserver. Also in the pellagra story Dr.Goldberger would do an experiment to prove that pellagra was not caused by germs but by nutrition. Dr.Goldberger did an experiment with a few prisoners to try and give them pellagra and cure them with a different diet. The trade-off for the prisoners was if they live then they get out of prison free. My inference that was based on observations is if you eat corn mush constantly then you will get pellagra.
B. Dr.Goldberger discovered that people that only had a poor diet of corn got pellagra. Also Dr. Goldberger shipped different diets to orphanages to cure kids with pellagra. During the 1920s, Goldberger continued research to identify what he called the "pellagra preventive factor." He learned that small amount of dried brewer's yeast prevented the disease as effectively and more cheaply than fresh, lean meat, milk, and vegetables. The land reform that Goldberger believed necessary to eliminate pellagra was accomplished not by scientific reasoning but by the invasion of boll weevils.

A. In the save Fred experiment I learned that I had to create a hypothesis on how I would save him. After I made the hypothesis I figured out how to do it easily. From the pellagra story I learned how people in the south got this disease called pellagra. The people got a butterfly rash and scabs and eventually went insane. Then Dr. Joseph Goldberger came down and saw it and made and inference that it must have been insects, germs, or nutrition that was causing it. Then he made an observation that only the poor people were getting it so it couldn’t have been insects and in the hospitals the doctors weren’t getting it so it couldn’t off been germs. Then he made a trade-off with some inmates that if they only eat corn, and sometimes pork, for a while then they get out of jail. The test worked and the inmates got pellagra so it had to have been the nutrition. But nobody believed him and said it could not have been that because it wasn’t a scientific method, and he died thinking he was a failure. Later we figured out that in was a loss in niacin caused it.
B. 1. On April 26, 1916 he injected five cubic centimeters of a pellagra’s blood into the arm of his assistant, Dr. George Wheeler. Wheeler shot six centimeters of such blood into Goldberger.
2. Then they swabbed out the secretions of a pellagra’s nose and throat and rubbed them into their own noses and throats.
3. They swallowed capsules containing scabs of pellagra’s' rashes.

A. In save Fred we observed what we needed to how to put the life saver around Fred. Are hypothesis was to pull the life save three ways to save Fred, and it worked. In the pellagra story Dr. Goldberger took observations to infer that pellagra was because of the poor people’s diet. Then when he tested on the prisoners there was a trade-off if the prisoners helped then they were free. B. Pellagra, a disease that results from a diet deficient, many poor Southerners died. He also stepped on Southern pride when he linked the poverty of Southern sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and mill workers to the deficient diet that caused pellagra. When his research experiments showed that diet and not germs (the currently held medical theory). He eat scabs, injected blood, smeared snot on himself.

A. In save Fred we used our hypothesis (An explanation based on observed facts) and found out if you stretch out the life saver using the paper clips then Fred will fit in the life saver.
In pellegra I learned the disease is caused be eating only corn for a long time because Dr. Goldberger observed that the only people who got pellegra were the poor and only ate corn. So he tested on prisoners and only gave them corn, corn bread, and corn mush for several weeks and 7 out of 11 prisoners got it. And he gave fresh vegetables and milk to orphans that that had pellegra and they got better.

B. Dr. Goldburger tested the disease on prisoners and changed the diet of orphans who had the disease and they got better. He ate scabs of people with pellagra and didn’t get it. He was around people with pellagra and didn’t get it. So he knew it was caused by eating corn so he told people to stop eating corn and he gave fresh food to people to cure them.

A. What I have learned from the past 2 activities is how to make observations and inferences. I have also learned that when you make Hypothesis’ you should use the words, “If and Then.” I learned in the activity Save Fred how to make observations. For instance we made the observation that Fred was too big to fit in the life saver because the hole was too small. In the activity The Pellagra Story I learned how Dr. Goldberger made his Hypothesis’ and I also learned the difference between Observations and Inferences. An Observation is where you use your senses to describe something. So for an example in The Pellagra Story, an observation would be that the poor people who ate corn were getting sick, but the rich people who weren’t eating corn weren’t getting sick. An Inference is a logical conclusion based on Observations. So for an example for an Inference, is the people who eat corn are going to get pellagra.
B. Three additional facts about how Dr. Goldberger solved the horrible disease is he fed the people in the prison unhealthy food and gave the kids in the orphanage healthy food and the kids in the orphanage got better and the people in the prison got pellagra. He also ate the scabs of people who had pellagra to see if he got pellagra but after he ate the scabs off the people he didn’t get sick. One more thing is that took the nasty stuff from people with pellagra’s throat and noses and put it in his nose and throat and he still didn’t get the disease.

B) I learned that Dr. Goldberger entered The City College of New York with hopes of becoming an engineer. Another thing I learned from the passage was that the people in south said that he was stepping on the southern pride, by saying that their deit/ way of life caused this disease. Also there might be as many as 100,000 pellagra cases including 10,000 deaths. And lastly I learned that the disease was the worst around 1920.

A. The 1st 2 activitie's were "saving fred" and "pellegra." I have learnd a lot from them two. In saving fred me in my parnter had to make a scienctific method to figure out how we were going to get fred into the life saver. In pellegra Mr.Goldberger made a hypothesis that "pellegra was cause by corn." Then he did test on prisnor's to make sure his hypothesis was correct. The whole class watched the pellegra movie, and doctor Goldberger observed that people with pellegra were poor, and had a unhealthy diet.

B.Pellegra was a horrible disease that people got from unhealthy diets, Eating to much corn (corn bread, Corn mush, and corn soup). People who got the disease were all poor, because they couldnt afford the vegtable's and healthy diet food. Mr.Goldberger did an experiment on the prisioner's, he changed there diet to all corn, and if they got the disease and then got cuired they would get let out of prison.

A. What I have learned from activities 1 and 2 is how to solve the problem by using observations and creating hypothesis to test.We first had to obsereve the problem the make a inference and hypothesis to test. those steps are in the scientific method. That is how Dr. Goldberger came up with an explanation and solved the pelegra diseas. He first observed the people and saw they were all poor so he infered they couldnt aford good fod which led them to having a bad diet and when he tested that hypothesis by feeding them well and they got better.

We have learned that Hypothesis is a Secentific statement that has a eduticated guess that is part of the experiment. This is used in Fred and Pellagra by doing the steps for the scientific method and observing and inferring what is happing. In the pellagra experiment Dr. Goldbugger Had a trade off with the prisoners which was if the prisoners survived the experiment the got out of jail.

A) In Activity 1 we made a hypothesis to predict how to get the life jacket back onto Fred to save him. After we worked out the problem, we fixed the hypothesis. We used observations and inferences to make a hypothesis.
B) Goldberger gave prisoners a trade off situation, a chance at freedom but only if they survived Pellegra. He gave them Pellegra then cured them by changing their diets.
