The Cheetah Problem!



     


  

This Chart shows the predicted decline in cheetah population throughout the world. Currently, there are roughly 10,000 cheetahs in Africa and Asia.  The likely extinction of the viable cheetah population is sometime around 2015-2025.  Viability is the key word. A population becomes genetically non viable when the population drops to below 12,000.   It would seem likely that the species will survive but only in limited surroundings, provided captive breeding goes well. The problem of the endangered cheetah is quite complex but the underlying problem is really about human population growth and expansion.

This week we will be learning a little history about genetics and the father of genetics Gregor Mendel. We will also practice what we learned about how parents pass traits on to their offspring using punnet squares.  Finally, you will be introduced to the cell cycle, mitosis, and meiosis.

A.     Read the article and use the link below to answer the following analysis questions in complete thoughts.

Core A, Unit D, Genetics, Blog 1

Eat your vegetables, before they eat you!

This week we will be learning about genetics. Earlier we learned about traits and characteristics and how they affect the appearance of an organism. This week we will be focusing on inherited traits, genes and alleles. We will also be setting up an experiment that shows how these inherited traits are passed from parent to offspring in plants!

KEY WORDS
Inherited Traits- An inherited trait is a characteristic passed from parents to the offspring or child through genes.

Genes- The basic unit of heredity. Different forms of genes are called alleles.

Alleles Alternative form of a gene inherited separately from each parent. (for eye color the allele might result in blue or brown eyes).


KEY CONCEPT: All organisms have genes and inherited traits.
